Users Beware Of The New Tactic Scam Using Google Ads

Reading Time: 2 minutes read

Besides technology, scam tactics are among the things that evolve pretty rapidly and some would say creatively. There’s a high chance of you getting scammed the second you opened the internet.

Source: Malwarebytes Threat Intelligence

Recently, cybercriminals are finding a new way to step up their game. Malwarebytes, a cybersecurity company reported that they detected a major malvertising campaign going around, exploiting Google Ads to lure their victims. Considering that most people resort to Google as their main web browser, the campaign poses a big threat to both users and Google since it is able to produce ads that are disguised as one of the giant companies so it would be difficult to tell a difference. It can easily spread malicious malware, phishing pages or other cyber attacks.

Source: Bleepingcomputer

Here’s how this scam works.

If you search for “YouTube” related keywords, The first advertisements that will appear top of the page is ‘YouTube-Best of YouTube videos’ or ‘YouTube.com-YouTube-Best of YouTube videos for You.’ By a glance, you can’t really tell that it’s fake since it uses the correct youtube.com URL.

But, once you clicked on the fake link, it will direct you to a tech support scam pretending to be a security alert from Windows Defender. Other than YouTube, Facebook, Amazon, and Walmart are among the popular searches that the cybercriminals made use of for the campaign.

Usually, the scammers would ‘lock’ your computer and tell you that it is infected. To resolve that, you have to purchase a support license that probably going to cost you a lot but provides no benefit whatsoever. Since Malwarebytes reported that the campaign is still actively running, users need to be extra vigilant in utilizing the internet.

Splitting The News Feed To Two? Facebook Introduces The New ‘Feeds’ tab

Reading Time: 2 minutes read

Mark Zuckerberg in his recent post introduced a new tab on Facebook called Feeds that lets you see the latest posts from your friends, pages, and groups. So, what changed exactly? Well, now the usual News Feed interface that you normally see will be split in two.

Source: Meta

The primary tab labeled ‘Home’ is the first thing that you will see when you open the app. It is designed to be more of a discovery engine that provides you with personalized content. It is a place for you to discover new connections and entertainment. The contents or recommendations that popped up on your Home tab are based on the things the algorithm finds that interest you the most. In some way, it is kind of similar to the TikTok app.

On the other hand, the new Feeds tab will provide more access to your friend’s content or updates from people and communities that you already connected with on Facebook. However, the ‘Suggested For You’ posts will not be available in Feeds.

Source: Meta

These two tabs are expected to be available to iPhone and Android users globally in the upcoming week. In addition, users will see Feeds as a tab in the shortcut bar and it will change based on which parts of the app users utilized the most. But, the tab can also be pinned on the shortcut bar to make it stay permanently.

This new update to Facebook News Feed can also be helpful especially for business owners to market their products more extensively since users are more likely to stumble upon their pages through recommendations and discovery features. It can be seen that the main focus of this update is to ensure users can still keep up with their close friends or family while discovering new connections all at the same time.

Apple Pay Might Be Available for users in Malaysia

Reading Time: 2 minutes read

Despite the increasing request for Apple Pay to be made available in Malaysia, it seems that it would probably take a few more years before that request is granted. Although the Apple Pay setting has been enabled for Apple users in Malaysia, the feature still doesn’t support Malaysian bank-issued cards. However, there is a high possibility that Apple is working on it though.

Recently, Lowyat.NET Forumer ken8888 has shared a screenshot of an SMS notification that indicates Apple Pay might be coming to Malaysia soon.

Source image: ken8888, Lowyat.NET Forums

As can be seen, the SMS is received from AmBank with a link attached, assuming it would bring the user directly to the Apple Pay section on AmBank’s website. Unfortunately, Lowyat.net pointed out that when they tried to access it, there was only a ‘404 error’ that shows up.

Apart from that, Lowyat.net also tried adding a card via the ‘Add Card’ option on Apple Wallet but it leads to a dead end as the app only directed them to the Apple US support site. At the moment, there is no further clarification provided from Apple and AmBank sides regarding this issue. The unavailability of this feature is not a surprise since Malaysia is still not listed as one of the countries and regions that support Apple Pay.

The SMS received has brought up many possibilities. It could be that AmBank is working on including Apple Pay for its customers. But, for now, we just have to wait for an official statement from either Apple or AmBank regarding the status of Apple Pay in Malaysia.
