10% Sales Tax To Be Imposed On Online Goods

Reading Time: < 1 minute read

Following the passing of the Sales Tax (Amendment) Bill 2022 by the Dewan Rakyat with a majority voice vote, a flat 10% sales tax will be imposed on goods purchased online and delivered to Malaysia by vendors registered with the finance ministry.

So, if you purchase an order from oversea, on any e-commerce site such as Lazada or Shopee, your goods will be charged with this new tax.

This flat rate will be applied to low-value goods (LVG) sold online for less than RM500. This tax rate will go into effect the following year. Moreover, this applies to goods imported from oversea, regardless of whether the seller is located within or outside of Malaysia.

According to finance minister Tengku Zafrul, when tabling Budget 2022 last November, a sales tax would be imposed on low-value goods sourced from overseas, sold through online platforms, and delivered to the country.

Deputy Finance Minister Shahar Abdullah noted that the government expects to collect RM200 million per year from the implementation of this tax. Therefore it will level the playing field between online sellers both inside and outside Malaysia.

Source: @riisams Twitter

First spotted by a Twitter user @riisams, he posted a picture of an Apple Pay signage that says ‘Apple Pay accepted here’ in one of the Maxis centres in Selangor earlier this morning.

Similar to previous evidence of Apple Pay coming to Malaysia, there is no official statement from Apple, Shopee, or Ambank that clarifies the status of the feature or when will users get to utilize it.

Yesterday, it seems like Shopee Malaysia will also add Apple Pay as one of the payment methods on its e-commerce platform but again, users can’t really access it yet.

Looking at all these hints, we can only hope that Apple Pay might be available for real this time and it will come very soon.

Google Launches A New Business Attribute, Supporting Asian-owned Business

Reading Time: < 1 minute read

Google recently announced a new way for Asian-owned businesses to thrive by enhancing their digital presence in this large community.

The giant company is adding a label that would act as a guide for users to easily discover and support businesses from marginalized communities, including Asian communities. Users can now include the Asian-owned attribute in their Business Profile on Search and Maps. Ad-supported publishers will be able to identify as Asian-owned in Display & Video 360’s Marketplace in the coming weeks as well.

Moreover, this new update added to the existing business attributes provided by Google which includes tags such as women, or Black-owned brands. It is the initiative for business owners to be recognized extensively across Google platforms and for people to have a diversity of business options to choose from.

For those who are unfamiliar with this feature, here’s how the business attribute works.

if you select a business identity attribute (women, Black), customers will notice a small icon indicating your business identifies on your product description pages (PDP) on the “Shopping” tab. Customers can also use the identity attributes to filter for businesses.

However, the tags are optional and are currently available to only retailers based in the United States. Businesses can choose whether or not to use the attribute on their Business Profile, and they can easily opt-out at any time.

This new addition will give more exposure to small businesses out there, especially in the post-Covid era. Leanne Luce, Google’s product manager in her post said that “It’s our hope the Asian-owned attribute brings people together and provides our communities with much-needed recognition: to help them be seen and thrive. We are excited to spotlight Asian-owned businesses and highlight part of what makes our community unique and important.”

Shopee To Add Apple Pay As One Of Its Payment Methods

Reading Time: < 1 minute read

As part of its updates, Shopee today added Apple Pay as one of the payment methods in their e-commerce platform. So, you might have noticed the Apple Pay option popping up when you purchase something on Shopee.

Source: Amanz

This feature has not been activated yet, but this addition indicates that it will be added and introduced in Malaysia soon.

A few weeks ago, we reported that Apple Pay may be able to support Malaysian bank-issued cards, through an ‘accidental’ SMS from Ambank with a link attached to what we assume will direct users to the Apple Pay section. But, the link only resulted in an error page. Moreover, both parties haven’t released any official statement on that, so the availability of Apple Pay is yet to be confirmed.

Now with this new update from Shopee, Apple Pay might come sooner than we expect! So you might want to wait in the next few days, weeks or months for a possible announcement from Apple, Ambank or Shopee regarding the launches of Apple Pay in Malaysia. Stay tuned!

WhatsApp Group Admin Can Now Delete Unwanted Messages

Reading Time: 2 minutes read

Being in a group chat can be fun especially when you can interact with your friends all at once. But, there might be some inappropriate messages being sent that could potentially cause misunderstanding among the members. Well, WhatsApp has provided a solution for that!

Source: TechNave

WhatsApp recently introduce a new group chat feature that allows administrators to delete messages sent by group participants. The feature has the ability to remove unwanted messages in group chat.

This latest feature is not much of a difference from the existing delete message feature that you are already familiar with. If you are an admin in a group chat and wanted to delete a message, there will be a pop-up message informing that you are deleting the participant’s message for everyone in the chat and that the participant will see that you’ve deleted their message.

Once you delete a message, a text will appear and inform you that, ‘You deleted this message as an admin.’ Other group members will also be able to see that a certain message is deleted by you. According to Amanz, some WhatsApp users in Malaysia are able to use the new feature, and currently, it is slowly being rolled out to all users worldwide.

To all group admins, you now have the power to filter out and control the messages sent by your members that you deem offensive. However, this feature will likely be used in the wrong way too. So, use it wisely!

Facebook Live Shopping Feature Will Be Shut Down Starting October 1

Reading Time: 2 minutes read

Back in another episode of Facebook altering its features, it is reported that the company will shut down its live shopping feature on October 1st to focus on Reels. Following the announcement on its blog post, Facebook says that users will no longer be able to host any new or scheduled live shopping events on Facebook.

Source: Business Insider

In addition, Facebook stated that users will still be able to use Facebook Live to broadcast live events, but they will be unable to create product playlists or tag products in their Facebook Live videos.

Facebook clarifies that “as consumers’ viewing behaviours are shifting to short-form video, we are shifting our focus to Reels on Facebook and Instagram, Meta’s short-form video product,”

“If you want to reach and engage people through video, try experimenting with Reels and Reels ads on Facebook and Instagram. You can also tag products in Reels on Instagram to enable deeper discovery and consideration,” the company added.

By removing this feature, it shows Facebook’s commitment to incorporate Reels on its platform, much like Instagram although the changes received a backlash from its users which eventually forces the company to temporarily walk back a few of the changes made on the app.

This move can also be considered risky since some creators or business owners have been using the live shopping feature as their main platform to generate revenue, so shutting it down could result in another outrage. But, we will see how this will play out in the coming months.

TNB Collabs With PLUS Malaysia To Build EV Charging Stations Along The Highways

Reading Time: < 1 minute read

As part of its collaboration with PLUS Malaysia, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) is planning to build an electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure along the North-South Expressway. Moreover, over the span of three years, the utility company will invest RM90 million to develop the EV ecosystem.

Source: WapCar

Back in March, TNB and PLUS announced their collaboration as sustainable initiatives to reduce carbon production on PLUS highways. Both parties had stated that EV charging stations, energy efficiency monitoring, and solar photovoltaic systems will be installed at selected rest and relaxation (R&R) areas along the PLUS highway network.

According to TNB President Baharin Din, the EV market has the potential for 3,300 charging points for 33,350 battery electric vehicles (BEV) by 2025, with an annual electricity revenue of RM80 million, which is expected to increase to 18,000 charging points and an annual electricity revenue of RM1.25 billion by 2030.

By 2030, Baharin predicts half a million EVs to be on the road with 2.3 TWh of electricity charging requirements. Thus, it will save 4.4 million tons of C02 emissions.

To further develop the EV industry, TNB will also provide EV industry upskilling and reskilling courses, electrification around 4,200 of TNB’s own fleet of vehicles, sponsor EV-related studies, and nurture alliances among EV sector players such as ZEVA (Zero Emission Vehicle Association).
