The most used video messaging apps during COVID-19

Reading Time: 4 minutes read

Before the World Health Organization declares the COVID-19 as the global pandemic disease, many people were still continuing to work from their office. But no one expected that COVID-19 could be the unexpected disease which shook the worldwide economy. This has caused many people to work from home. Students were attending classes too by using video messaging apps such as Zoom.

During this pandemic, most of the people have started to use the video messaging apps to have their meetings. School students were excited because of the lockdown, but teenagers were sad because they can’t meet their friends. Youngsters were using WhatsApp to video call to meet their friends without leaving home.

This has caused the interest in video messaging client to increase up to five times than the usual usage. Research has been carried out by Picodi to find out which are the most used video messaging apps during the COVID-19 period. The research has been done by analysing the average numbers of online search queries of these video messaging clients. As we all know the most common video messaging apps are Line, Viber, WeChat, WhatsApp and the most recent ones, Zoom. The research team has even compared the result with other tech giants such as Facebook, Google and Microsoft. These data obtained through the Google Keyword Planner.

WhatsApp is the most used video messaging app

whatsapp

Based on their analysis, it is found that surprisingly, most of the Asia peoples tend to use WhatsApp more compared to Zoom, Line or WeChat. It was noticeable that Malaysia is one of the countries too which was using WhatsApp most of the time. We all already know that WhatsApp is the most popular messaging platform in the world. But what we didn’t expect was it is the most popular video messaging apps to in the Asia Pacific region.

Taking a look at the map below, it shows that 98% of the South-East Asia countries are using WhatsApp to video call their friends. Countries such as Indonesia, Singapore and even Papua New Guinea were using the WhatsApp video messaging app to communicate with their friends. But how about attending meetings or conference calls? It is for sure, you can’t attend meetings and conference calls using WhatsApp. That will be a total inappropriate. We are assuming, some companies could be using Skype for Business though to have their conference calls and meetings.

Apart from WhatsApp, there are a few countries which insisted on using Zoom app as the video messaging app. For example, countries such as Australia, Brunei and Japan are mostly using Zoom video messaging app to have their meetings. The reason could be, most probably those companies in these countries requires the employees to use video messaging app and the camera has to be turned on. Personally, I don’t like turning on my cameras during the conference calls.

Even though Zoom is not secure but still these countries insisted on using it

Did you know that recently security researchers found out that Zoom logins have been sold in the dark web? Yes, Zoom is not secure as it says it is. There are many complaints on the Zoom app. In countries such as Malaysia, there is even fake news saying that installing Zoom is allowing hackers to steal their money from their bank account. That doesn’t make sense at all. Maybe as the Zoom video messaging app is vulnerable your personal information can be collected but not your banking account guys. Beware of this type of fake news.

Well, it’s pretty obvious that countries such as Thailand and Taiwan are still using Line as their favourite video messaging apps recently during this COVID-19 global pandemic outbreak. On the other hand, both Bhutan and Myanmar prefers to use WeChat and Viber respectively. To be honest, it has been for years, we hear that people are still using Viber or WeChat. Maybe WeChat there are still groups of people likes to use it but not Viber. The reason people could be using Viber instead of WhatsApp is because of their network availability in a certain region of Myanmar.

In a nutshell, it is crystal clear that WhatsApp is the most used video messaging apps during this global pandemic COVID-19 period. Maybe if we continue the research up until today then probably, Zoom could be the most used video messaging apps out of these video messaging apps.

The rumours of LG unveiling a smartphone has been going around lately. It has been two years since LG unveils a new smartphone. Many people were saying that LG is not keeping up to the trend because the smartphone which LG launches didn’t go on well. But, now LG is stepping up the paddle once again to compete with other smartphone makers. LG finally unveils the luxurious midrange smartphone called the LG Velvet.

The name itself sounds luxurious, so do the phone design. Upfront the LG Velvet features a 6.8″ OLED display with a tiny notch at the top center which houses the front selfie camera. The LG Velvet also comes with IP68 rating where it is dustproof and waterproof. You can bring the LG Velvet even for swimming and it still works fine.

Another thing to note about the design is it has a military standard approved by the US Department of Defence. This means the smartphone is durable where you can drop at any heights and still it works. Not to forget about the fingerprint scanner. When we take a look at the design of the LG Velvet, we could find the fingerprint scanner neither at the rear nor at the sides. This makes us conclude that the LG Velvet has an in-display fingerprint scanner.

At the camera section, the luxurious midrange smartphone, LG Velvet features an array of triple camera setup. LG is calling it the raindrop cameras. If you watched the LG Velvet invitational video, that’s how LG promoted the LG Velvet. And also if you take a look at the camera design it indeed looks as if it is a rain droplet. From small droplets to big droplets. It is easy to identify which one is the main camera.

First of all, similar to other major midrange smartphones, the LG Velvet also comes with the 48MP main camera. Then the smaller droplet is the 8MP ultra-wide-angle camera. Whereas the smallest droplet is the 5MP depth sensor camera. Over at the front, the LG Velvet features 16MP front-facing selfie camera. Surprisingly, there is an additional feature called Autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR). Using this feature, you can record some sounds such as paper crippling sound and munching sound. We haven’t seen other smartphones comes with the ASMR feature which seems quite interesting though.

Under the hood, the LG Velvet has the latest chip from Qualcomm which is the Snapdragon 765 with 5G support. It comes with an 8GB of RAM and a 128GB of internal storage. You can expand the storage up to 2TB with the microSD card. Besides that, after such a long time, we are seeing the stylus back on the mid-range smartphone. For the battery wise, the LG Velvet has a decent amount of 4,300mAh battery. According to the LG website, the battery can last up to 16 hours of continuous calls and 440 hours of standby time. For a mid-range smartphone, it also supports wireless charging too.

For the pricing wise, the LG Velvet is priced at â‚©899,800 (RM3,196). Currently this luxurious mid-range phone is only available in South Korea. However, LG could be working on to release the LG Velvet globally too. We might need to wait for further updates from LG itself.

Selangor gets green light to continue Ramadhan e-Bazaar

Reading Time: 2 minutes read

Every year, during this month there will be Ramadhan Bazaar all over Malaysia. However, due to the Movement Control Order (MCO), the Malaysia government has announced that the Ramadhan Bazaar shouldn’t be allowed. This including e-Bazaars too are not allowed during this period.

But, now it seems like the state of Selangor has gotten the green light to continue the Ramadhan e-Bazaar. According to the state government, Selangor sellers can continue selling foods during this Ramadhan period through the two new platforms which the state government introduces. It is the Grab Selangor and Selangor Platform (Plats).

Central kitchens will be used as collection centres only

Previously, the state government proposed a plan where the sellers will use central kitchens, where the sellers can prepare their food. This proposal has been declined because it is impossible to let a whole group of sellers in one place. For that reason, the Selangor state government has proposed this new e-Bazaar platform, where the central kitchens will be used as the collection centres. This means there wouldn’t be any cooking activities in this areas.

According to Selangor Menteri Besar, he says that the state government has already identified 10 local authority (PBT) halls and 67 restaurants. These 77 locations will be mainly used to provide foods during the Ramadhan period. Most recently, Penang state government confirms that it will be continuing with the Ramadhan Bazaar through its Jom Beli Platform (JBO). Now, Selangor also will be continuing the Ramadhan Bazaar too.

Though, there is a catch where the sellers has to receive typhoid injection before participating in the Ramadhan Bazaar. According to the Ministry of Health, this injection is mandatory required for all the sellers. For the delivery partners wise, the state government will be collaborating with Grab, Bunkusit, Mr Spedy, Zepto Express and MatDespatch.

In conclusion, only these two states will be able to continue with the Ramadhan Bazaar through the e-Bazaar platforms. The state government is encouraging sellers to participate in this e-Bazaar platform by providing easy financing without interest to eligible small traders with the financing of between RM3,000 and RM5,000 through Hijrah Selangor.

Penangites can continue to order food during Ramadhan

Reading Time: 2 minutes read

Due to the global pandemic COVID-19 outbreak, Malaysia government have initiated lockdown nationwide last March 2020. As we all know, the month of Ramadan is just around the corner, many of the muslims and non-muslim will be ready to try varieties of foods. However, due to the Movement Control Order (MCO), the government announces that Ramadhan Bazaars will not be allowed.

Well, it looks like the government decision is not stopping for Penangites to continue having the Ramadhan Bazaars. Thankfully, if you are a Penangite, then you can continue buying your favorite foods during this period. Good news to Penang local sellers and hawkers, the Penang local council will be launching its own Jom Beli Online (JBO) platform.

Using this JBO platform, Penang sellers can continue doing their food business online. Both the full-time sellers and part-time sellers, can continue staying at home and continue to prepare foods for evening. Then there will be a service where the delivery guy will pick up all the orders from the sellers home and deliver it to the customers.

According to the Penang Island City Council, their main delivering partner would be DeliverEat. DeliverEat is one of the most famous food delivering service which is based in Penang. With the JBO platform, even other delivery partners also could collaborate with the Penang local council. However, Grab has decline to join the JBO platform during this upcoming Ramadhan period.

In a nutshell, if you are one of the sellers from Penang reading this post and you wished to join the JBO platform, you can mail it from here. And the arrangement can be done accordingly.
