Don’t click on any app links in WhatsApp for Android

Reading Time: 3 minutes read

Recently, there has been discussions regarding WhatsApp privacy issue. This has caused millions of WhatsApp users to jump to other apps such as Telegram and Signal. Well, we will discuss about it further in another post. For now, there has been a new issue in WhatsApp messages which allows hackers to spread malware to your Android devices through WhatsApp.

Are you shocked? The Hacker News has reported that there is a new malware which can infect your Android smartphones. This is just a normal link which you always click from your WhatsApp. By clicking this special link, you will be immediately redirected to the Google Play Store.

How does the WhatsApp malware works?

I am sure right now, you probably might be thinking that’s nothing wrong with links which open Google Play Store right. No! You are wrong! This is a phishing link which recreates the Google Play Store. From there, it will prompt you to download a simple app such as Huawei Mobile app.

Upon downloading this simple app, the malware will be automatically activated. Before that, you will be requested to give permissions to the app before activating it. Once the permission is given then whenever someone sends you a WhatsApp message, the malware will auto-reply to your receiver with the embedded link to download the Huawei Mobile app.

According to a security researcher, Lucas Stefanko this malware is very dangerous as it can spread this malware to the rest of your buddies. From there many harmful things can be done to their smartphone. Based on the video shown by Lucas, the malware is smart enough because it doesn’t spam your receiver. It only sends one message in one hour. That’s makes this malware to be more trustable to your receivers.

He also added that this malware is also capable to spread to other messaging apps on your Android smartphones. For example, your Facebook Messenger or maybe your Instagram DM. I have seen many cases where people have sent me some weird links to my Facebook. When I approach them they told me that they didn’t sent those links it seems. This is what the malware does. It loves spamming others.

How to avoid this messaging malware?

For a technical background person, it could be possibly easier to avoid such issues. But for a non-technical person, they might click on the link and got their smartphone infected with malware. If I were you, the very first thing I might do when I receive such a link is ask the sender who sends me this link. It is good to notify them before clicking on the link.

Next step, is to read the embedded link itself. When you read the link itself, you can already know whether the link is really legitimate or not. For example in the video above, Lucas did a demo on how the malware works. He has also shown the link which is sent by the malware to your receivers. As shown in the left image below is the original Huawei Mobile app link from the Google Play Store and the right side is the fake link from the hacker.

Can you guys spot the difference? That’s is how you can know whether a link is legitimate or not.

The one last step, assuming you have downloaded the app, when it request you to give permission for the app, you should read the notice carefully. Something which is suspicious and it says read your personal information is totally dangerous. Make sure you delete the app from your phone immediately. Unless it is from a verified source then you may proceed to give permission to the app.

In the recent times, Apple has always been in the limelight when it comes to setting a new trend in the tech industry. Starting from removing the audio jacks in the iPhone up until now removing chargers from the iPhone box. Many smartphone makers tries to mock when Apple removes the charger from the iPhone box. However, things are looking to be different as Huawei is also in the verge of following Apple footsteps.

According to the news from GizmoChina, it is reported that Huawei upcoming products could be shipped without having chargers. Recently, Huawei has conducted a survey where it asks the consumers whether is it really necessary to include USB-C charging cable in the headset box. Besides that, the China tech giant also has asked the consumer whether will it affect the purchase decision if chargers are removed.

Even though, Huawei did not really mentioned about its smartphones lineups in the survey, yet there could be a slight possibility for this to happen. The main reason is because, before the launch of the new Apple Watch series 6, Apple has also conducted a similar survey. From the Apple survey, Apple concludes that people are okay if the chargers are removed from the box. Now, it looks like Huawei is also preparing itself to remove the charger from its upcoming headsets. Then later on, it will remove the charger from the smartphones too.

Did you know that, besides Huawei, it is also rumoured that Samsung upcoming Galaxy S21 smartphones also will be shipped without having a charging brick in the box. Could this be a step from Huawei too to save the environment?

In conclusion, we can safely say that Apple is the trendsetter in the tech industry. We are curious to see what’s both Samsung and Huawei has to say about removing charges from their product box.

In today’s Oppo Inno Day 2020 event, Oppo has unveiled tons of new technologies. One of them is the Oppo X 2021. It is the world’s first-ever rollable smartphone. As for now, there is already foldable smartphones from both Samsung and Huawei. But, none of these smartphone makers has ever designed the rollable smartphone.

As for now, the Oppo X 2021 is still a prototype device. Surely, there are high chances for Oppo to unveil the Oppo X 2021 as an official smartphone which can go for sale next year. First of all, let’s see how does this rollable display works.

How Oppo rollable display works?

The Oppo X 2021 features three of Oppo’s proprietary technologies which are the Roll Motor powertrain, 2-in-1 Plate and Warp Track high strength screen laminate. By using the Roll Motor powertrain, the display is able to roll smoothly when the use touch at the side of the phone. With the Roll Motor powertrain, the display rolls out until 7.4″ and then it rolls in until 6.7″.

Under the display, there is the 2-in-1 Plate which is used to form a single surface display. The plates are placed in an opposite direction as shown in the image below. When the screen rolls in, the plates comes closer together which then forms a single surface.

Which Malaysia telco offers the best iPhone 12 deals

Reading Time: 4 minutes read

The iPhone 12 series will be available for purchase starting 13th November 2020, which is tomorrow onwards. However, the pre-order has already begun on 6th November until today. If you have missed the pre-order for the iPhone 12 series, do not worry as the most powerful smartphone will be available for purchase tomorrow onwards.

You can simply purchase the iPhone 12 series from electronic stores such as Harvey Norman, Courts or SenQ. Besides that, you can also get the new iPhones from Apple authorised resellers. But, there is a catch where you need to pay for the full amount for the iPhone 12 series smartphones. Another option which we can think of is getting the iPhone 12 series from the major telcos in Malaysia.

Maxis

For Maxis customers, Maxis is offering the iPhone 12 series starting from RM110 per month. Well considering RM110 is cheaper than other telcos in Malaysia, but the RM110 is for the Zerolution customers only. And if you take a look at the image above, only for the iPhone 12 mini Maxis offers RM110 per month.

Another thing to note is if you are taking the iPhone 12 series, then there is only two options which you can purchase the iPhone 12 series through Maxis Zerolution plan and through Maxis standard postpaid plan. Taking into consideration of purchasing the iPhone 12 Pro under the Zerolution plan, then you need to pay RM167 per month just for the device itself. This is not included with the postpaid plan which you have to pay for the Maxis line.

For example, the iPhone 12 Pro combined with the Maxis Zerolution 128 plan, you need to pay RM295 per month. The only good thing about this is, you don’t have to pay any upfront payment for the iPhone. If you are an existing Maxis customer then you shall opt in for the iPhone 12 series with Maxis.

Unless, you prefer to pay down payment amount for the device itself, then the iPhone 12 mini starts from RM2168. Whereas your monthly bill will be charged at RM128 per month. At the moment of writing this post the Maxis iPhone 12 pre-order has been closed. Due to this reason, we couldn’t share you the exact pricing details.

Celcom

For Celcom users you have two choices too similar to Maxis. You can either purchase the iPhone 12 series through its EasyPhone plan or its device bundle plan. For the cheapest postpaid plan, the iPhone 12 Pro can be purchased through the EasyPhone plan where you don’t have to pay any upfront payment. You only need to pay RM274 for both the Celcom MEGA plan and the iPhone 12 Pro itself.

Whereas for those of you who prefer to pay the upfront payment, then you need to pay RM3748 for the iPhone 12 Pro itself and then RM700 for the Celcom MEGA plan. The RM700 upfront payment will be rebated in your bill for 10 months. In total you need to pay RM4,448 upfront payment before collecting the iPhone 12 Pro.

Our advice to you would be if you are existing Celcom customer, then the best choice would be purchasing the iPhone 12 Pro under the EasyPhone plan. With this plan, you might not require to spend RM4,000 in a single time.

U Mobile

For U Mobile customers, you can also get the iPhone 12 series starting from RM94 per month. U Mobile offers the iPhone 12 series through its U Package and also its Hero package. Again, it depends on you whether how much you are willing to pay for the upfront payment. Based on that, it will be easier to decide which iPhone package you can subscribe to based on your preference.

Let’s see how much is the iPhone 12 Pro which U Mobile offers. All you need to pay is RM3,749 for the device only. There is no additional upfront payment. And every month, you need to pay RM99 for the Hero P99. Isn’t it cool?

However, if you really opt in to pay a lesser upfront payment, then you need to pay RM164 per month for the Hero P99 plan. There will be additional charges too for both the device and the plan. But, don’t worry it will be much lesser than the previous offer which we mentioned.

When it comes to U Mobile, our kind advice would be purchasing the iPhone 12 Pro for just RM3749. Then monthly, you can continue paying RM99 just for your Hero P99 plan only.

In conclusion, the best choice which we really prefer to purchase the iPhone 12 series smartphones are from U Mobile. The main reason is, the upfront payment is quite less compare to the other telco providers. Besides that, the monthly payment is still lesser than RM100. Unlike other telcos which requires you to pay more than RM100 per month. And also the device upfront payment are quite higher compared to U Mobile.
