Foldable display is the future of the smartphone display technology. That is what we have been thinking until now. But, this time it is going to be changed by an unexpected smartphone maker. Today, Oppo has unveiled its first-ever rollable smartphone.
In today’s Oppo Inno Day 2020 event, Oppo has unveiled tons of new technologies. One of them is the Oppo X 2021. It is the world’s first-ever rollable smartphone. As for now, there is already foldable smartphones from both Samsung and Huawei. But, none of these smartphone makers has ever designed the rollable smartphone.
As for now, the Oppo X 2021 is still a prototype device. Surely, there are high chances for Oppo to unveil the Oppo X 2021 as an official smartphone which can go for sale next year. First of all, let’s see how does this rollable display works.
How Oppo rollable display works?
The Oppo X 2021 features three of Oppo’s proprietary technologies which are the Roll Motor powertrain, 2-in-1 Plate and Warp Track high strength screen laminate. By using the Roll Motor powertrain, the display is able to roll smoothly when the use touch at the side of the phone. With the Roll Motor powertrain, the display rolls out until 7.4″ and then it rolls in until 6.7″.
Under the display, there is the 2-in-1 Plate which is used to form a single surface display. The plates are placed in an opposite direction as shown in the image below. When the screen rolls in, the plates comes closer together which then forms a single surface.

Oppo X 2021 Hands On
If you notice in the hands-on video above, the Oppo representative demos the Oppo X 2021 smartphone. One of the demo is watching movies on the rollable smartphone. When you are watching movie, the display will automatically rolls according to your need. This is something none of the smartphone maker has ever achieve.
Another use case is multitasking on apps. When you are browsing through your Twitter feeds, you can view it as a single screen. But when the powertrain motor kicks in, the Twitter app will automatically switch to multiple display, where you can view your Twitter feed at the same time you can also search for feeds.
