Attackers able to install spyware via WhatsApp voice call

Reading Time: 2 minutes read

Today, WhatsApp is the major messaging tool everyone uses to communicate with their loved ones. However, WhatsApp is not secure anymore. WhatsApp has a major vulnerability where it allows attackers to install Israel’s spyware into your phones.

This was first discovered at the beginning of May where attackers can install surveillance software into both iPhones and Android phones easily. The attacker will just have to make a WhatsApp voice call to your number and the spyware will be automatically installed into your phone. First of all, you have to know the term spyware before reading it further. Below is a video on what’s spyware all about.

Taking over mobile phones

According to the Financial Times, this spyware is developed by an Israeli company called NSO Group. According to them, they can transmit the spyware to the target phone even the person did not answer the phone call. Other than that, the call from the attacker also can disappear from the WhatsApp call logs.

According to NSO Groups, the spyware is design to take over mobile phones operating system. There reason they created this spyware is because they are working privately with the government.

According to the statement from WhatsApp spokesperson, WhatsApp encourages to users to update the latest version of its app. This is to avoid becoming victim of a spyware. NSO Groups also says they have official license to government to fight crime and terror. Additionally, NSO Groups also say it does not target any specific individuals or organizations.

The engineers of WhatsApp have fixed this vulnerability on last Sunday night and the updates have been added to the latest WhatsApp app.

In conclusion, WhatsApp believes this patch should be able to fix its vulnerability permanently. If you haven’t update your WhatsApp to its latest version. This is the right time to update it. Until now Facebook does not know how many phones are infected with this spyware.

iFixit teardown Google’s new Pixel 3a

Reading Time: 2 minutes read

During the Google I/O developer conference, Google launches its new mid-range smartphone, Google Pixel 3a, and Google Pixel 3a XL. According to Google, these are the first time they are entering into the mid-range market. Today, we have the iFixit team dissects the Pixel 3a to give us a glimpse of what’s inside the phone.

First of all, most of the smartphones require some heat to open the phone’s body. However, Google Pixel 3a able to open easily without heat. This is something unusual in current smartphones. This can be done without the need of iOpener. The trade-off here would be this smartphone will be less waterproof due to the “spongy-easily separated adhesive”

What, no iOpener? Although it would help, this phone was easy enough to open without heat—a rarity these days.

There was a rumor about the display where people says the panel is made by LG. But after iFixit teardown the phone, it is finally confirmed it is not true. Both the Pixel 3a and 3a XL OLED display panel is from Samsung. The display panel connects to the motherboard through a single ribbon cable.

The usual tiny side bezels leave this expensive OLED panel vulnerable to our opening pick. Expecting this, we safely slice alongside the display and free it from the phone.

Now, let’s recap what’s inside Google’s Pixel 3a smartphones. Pixel 3a is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 670 processor. Both these smartphones come with a 64GB internal storage with no external storage support. The same goes for the RAM too. Pixel 3a has a 4GB RAM on both the smaller and larger ones. Other than that, the rear of the phone is made of polycarbonate. Surprisingly, these phones come with the 3.55mm headphone jack which was removed in the previous Pixel devices.

After running the gauntlet of this teardown, we lay out our seemingly infinite number of stones parts.

In conclusion, iFixit gives their score for repairability of 6 out of 10. According to iFixit, the ribbon cables are obnoxious to work around and it is very easy to tear off if accidentally pulled. Well, will Google launch Pixel 3a smartphones in Malaysia? Since the beginning till now, Google has not launched any of the Pixel lineups to Malaysia. So if you are expecting to get one, you have to purchase it from Singapore only.
