Delete these 7 tracking apps from your Android phones

Reading Time: 4 minutes read

Nowadays, we are leaving in a dangerous world where there are full of visible and invisible threats. In order to protect our loved ones, we tend to install tracking software into our children phones. There are some boyfriends who want to protect their girlfriend, they tend to install tracking apps into their girlfriend phone. In a way it is good, but sometimes it can bring a lot of unusual consequences too. Recently, the mobile threat researchers at Avast, have listed seven apps in the Google Play Store which could possibly store all your personal data.

Interestingly, all these apps are developed by Russian developers. Through the app, it will allow your parents or boyfriends to track your every movement. This includes your employer can track your movement too if it’s installed on your phone. Last week Tuesday the mobile threat team found the first four apps which could possibly store your personal data. Immediately, Avast reports to Google to take remove from the Google Play Store and Google has already removed them. The following day, Avast found another three apps which have the same purpose. Those apps also has been removed from the Play Store.

However, now the issue is, there are at least 130,000 times people have installed all these apps from the Play Store. As we speak these apps hasn’t been uninstalled yet from any of those devices. Out of these seven apps, Spy Tracker and SMS Tracker has been installed for more than 50,000 times.

Image from Bernama

Without physical access to your device, the installation is not possible

You have to understand how the whole process works. It is not like in the movies where spies can install tracking apps remotely to their victim’s device without any physical access to the device. That’s not possible in reality. If your phone has any of these apps, then you should find it out someone who is close to you could have installed it on your phone.

The snoop has to go to the Google Play Store and install it in their victim device. After installing it, the snoop will have to enter their credentials, so that they can have complete access to the victims’ phone. They can even hide the app icon from the victims’ phone so that the victim wouldn’t have the chance to know the app is installed. From the app, the person will be able to track their victims’ exact location and even their call history and SMSes. There are more things can be done from the app.

“These apps shouldn’t be on the Google Play Store”

According to Avast head of mobile threat intelligence and security, Nikolaos Chrysaidos, these tracking apps are completely high unethical and disturbs the people’s privacy. These apps shouldn’t be at the Google Play Store at all. He also added, it promotes criminal behavior and it can be abusive too. Chrysaidos says these apps will be classified as stalkerware.

Avast uses its mobile detection platform apklab.io to detect these seven apps. He adds, Avast will be using their platform to detect the stalkerware in the Play Store and Avast will work together with Google to get those stalkerware removes from the Google Play Store.

As a Malaysians, it is our rights to cast our votes during each time during the general and state election. The general election of Malaysia always happens every five years only. During last year’s general election, it was the first time in history, the opposition party wins the election. The reason behind the winning is because of the number of voters turnout was higher than the previous general election.

However, sadly there are more than 3.8 million Malaysian who haven’t registered before the general election. One of the main reason some of them busy with their other work and they forgot to register. The voter’s registration can be done at any of the nearest post office or SPR branches. For the next general election onwards, Malaysians can start to register themselves online through SPR’s mySPR daftar portal page.

With this introduction of this online registration service, we can expect many Malaysians to register themselves as a voter. During last week parliament discussion, the Dewan Rakyat finally passes the bill amendment where it lowers Malaysians voting age from 21 years old to 18 years old. Other than that, the Election Commission also has sanction automatic voter registration. This means during the next general election teenagers who reach 18 years old can start to cast their vote.

At this moment, the Election Commission, Azharun advises Malaysians to register themselves as a voter. The automatic registration is a long process where that is not possible now. For now, the mySPR only allows Malaysians who are 21 years old and above to register online. The next election would be Sarawak state election which will take place in 2023.

Facebook and Google tracks you when you surf porn sites

Do you know that once upon a time Google launches a feature called incognito mode? One of the reasons Google launches the feature is to not track you when you are browsing online. However, according to a recent study, tech giants such as Facebook, Google, and Oracle might be tracking each time you visit adult sites. This happens even if you set your browser to private or incognito mode.

From the study, the authors analyze more than 22,484 adult sites and find that almost 93% of user data has been leaked to third parties. The author says that Google has a tracker on 74% of the adult sites in the world. Other than, that the world most famous social network has trackers on 10% of porn sites. Compared to Oracle, Facebook has lower trackers because Oracle has trackers on 24% of the porn sites. You can read their research paper for more information on their analysis.

Upon asking Google about this, one of the Google spokeswomen told that it is true Google is tracking its users when they surf to porn sites. However, Google is not using that information to build its advertising profiles.

Here is a statement from Google spokeswoman:

We don’t allow Google Ads on websites with adult content and we prohibit personalised advertising and advertising profiles based on a user’s sexual interests or related activities online. Additionally, tags for our ad services are never allowed to transmit personally identifiable information,

Even Facebook also gives its statement regarding this matter which it says similar to Google. At this moment, only Oracle has not responded to the New York Times regarding its tracking on porn sites.

It damages public figure reputation

Some of you might take it easily after reading Google’s statement, but the authors of the study say that this type of data which is being collected by Facebook and Google is very dangerous. This is because if a hacker one day hacks Facebook and Google, they can use this data against anyone. Imagine with this data a person can damage the reputation of a public figure.

Image result for google tracking

Moreover, there is also a security concern raised by the authors where the hackers have stolen email addresses, passwords, usernames, and credit card information previously. As for now, they didn’t reveal the exact number of data being leaked to hackers.

In conclusion, the internet is not safe anymore including browsers. Next time, you should beware on what could happen when you browse porn sites through any private browser or Google’s incognito mode. All your data is being stored somewhere inside a server at Facebook and Google data farm.
