Google Will Bring Out the New Augmented Reality Glasses to the Public

Reading Time: 2 minutes read

Google recently revealed that Augmented reality (AR) prototypes will be tested in public starting in August. For those who are wondering what AR glasses can do, it essentially helps us to have quick and easy access to whatever information we need including languages, navigations, and more.

Source image: Google

It holds the same function as your smartphone, only that all this information will be popped up directly in your line of sight. For instance, the company had integrated real-time translation and transcription into the early prototypes, so whenever you feel like learning foreign languages, the translation would be there.

According to a blog posted by Juston Payne, the company will start to bring AR testing into the real world as soon as next month since “testing only in a lab environment has its limitations”. With outdoor testing, the durability of the devices can be observed more realistically.  He added that factors such as weather can help improve the AR navigation experience which indoor testing cannot provide.

Google will start the testing of AR prototypes on a small scale. Some of the features that are included in the prototypes are translation, transcription, and navigation. If you imagine the glasses would look like something straight out of space, well, not really.

Google said that the prototypes look like normal glasses but they are equipped with in-lens display and audio and visual sensors (microphone and camera). Although the prototypes have cameras, they are unable to support photography or videography. But, the image data will be used to scan and translate whatever is in front of you.

Sounds pretty fun right? However, as of right now, you have to wait for more updates regarding the public testing since developing such advanced technology would take some time. In the meantime, go visit Google support to learn all about AR testing!

Xiaomi’s founder, Lei Jun recently unveiled the company’s debut of its first electric car. The prototype is expected to be revealed this upcoming August. Xiaomi’s initial plan was to launch its first electric vehicle (EV) in 2024 but seems like we are going to see the product sooner than we thought. This is not the first time we hear about Xiaomi’s plan to extend its wing to the electric vehicle market. The company had already made the information known to the public in 2021.

According to a report, Lei jun personally monitored the progress of the company’s first car. The company will run a series of tests including the winter test, right after its launch in August. It is also reported that the EV is planned to be mass produced in 2024. In conjunction with the launch, the company is planning to look for a PR director for a promotional campaign that is coming next month.

The Xiaomi Auto headquarters and its R&D division in Yizhuang are reportedly being built. The facility employs more than 1,000 employees and has the capability to produce 300,00 cars every year. Additionally, the first EV prototype will be designed by HVST Automobile Design, a company that is involved in designing the WM Motor Maven concept car.

Xiaomi is expected to launch two segments of cars namely A+ (L2 autonomous driving) and B (L3 autonomous driving). The former’s estimated price range is starting from 150,000 Yuan ($22,230). As for the latter, the price would likely be around 300,000 Yuan ($44,460).

YouTube Announces the New Shopping Tools For Creators and Viewers

Reading Time: 2 minutes read

Recently, YouTube announced its partnership with Shopify, a Canadian e-commerce company. With this collaboration, YouTube is introducing new shopping features on its platform. These new updates allow both creators and viewers to sell their products on their channels. On top of that, creators also can link their Shopify store to their own YouTube channel.

Source image: YouTube Official Blog

According to a post on YouTube’s official blog, creators can display their products directly to the audience during live streams or on their content. Furthermore, Shopify’s real-time inventory syncing allows viewers to see whether creators’ products are available or out of stock. Creators in the United State will have the access to onsite checkout so that viewers can complete the whole purchase process seamlessly without leaving YouTube. The first step that creators can take is to visit the ‘Shopping’ tab in YouTube Studio.

The ‘Shopping’ tab will make it easier for creators to manage how their products are tagged and featured in their channels. Moreover, the live shopping features can be accessed by all eligible creators which enables them to tag products to a live stream directly from the Live Control Room.

To make the features more extensive, YouTube will introduce a new shopping destination in the ‘explore’ tab that will show shoppable content that is relevant to viewers in the US, Brazil, and India, starting next week. As for other countries, the feature will roll out later this year.

Like many other social media platforms such as Tiktok and Instagram, YouTube seems to be morphing into an e-commerce platform as well. Now, users can no longer escape from the temptation of buying things online. Good thing is, with all these shopping features introduced, users would have a different range of products to choose from and probably can compare which one has the best value too!

Instagram users can purchase and track orders through DMs

Reading Time: 2 minutes read

Opening the Instagram app nowadays can be a bit confusing with all the changes that the app has gone through over the past years. It is no longer a platform merely for posting aesthetic pictures but also slowly evolving into an online shopping app and well, a mixture of every social media app, I guess.

Recently, Instagram has unveiled its latest feature known as ‘payments in chat’ that allows users to purchase orders and track them through Direct Messages (DMs).

If we take a look at this new feature, it is not entirely an odd concept. Before this, business owners have already utilized DMs to discuss the details about the product they sell or to answer customers’ inquiries. So, the payment in chat feature intends to make the transaction process more convenient for both parties. In other words, Instagram would want users to stay longer in the app (or probably never leave it).

This feature is currently available for users in the US.

Source image: Instagram (from buyer’s point of view)

Here’s how this feature works. Firstly, the buyer will browse and select whatever product they favored as usual. Then, once they make a decision, the business owner will create a request for payment. Next, the buyer will click on the ‘yes’ and ‘Pay’ options if they agree to proceed with the purchase.

Once that step is completed, the buyer will review all the necessary detail of the payment including the shipping process. When it is done, a screenshot will be given to show that the transaction is being processed through PayPal. In addition, payment in messages only works for qualified business accounts on Instagram. Overall, the whole process seems simple enough to navigate through.

By launching this new update, Instagram intends to make use of the e-commerce features that have recently gained popularity among users. We can only hope that this new update would function as well as it claims.

If you have this feature, go on and test it out!

UPDATE: The New Google Wallet Is Coming To Android Soon

Reading Time: 2 minutes read

UPDATE: The new Google Wallet is now available for users to download for Android 5.2 or later.

Forgetting your wallet while you already hit the road must be the most frustrating thing ever right? Now that everything is going digital, you still can pay for most things through your phone but what if you need your driver’s license or other documents? Well, lucky for you, Google just started rolling out an app known as Google Wallet, your new digital wallet.

Introducing Google Wallet might not be much of a surprise for users who have already familiarized themselves with the previous Google payment system. Google Wallet has already been around in previous years and since then it went through several changes. In 2018, the app became Google Pay, and now it’s converting back to its original Wallet.

Source image: Google

The idea of Google Wallet is that it could manage all your digital documents including debit and credit cards. Not only that, but you could also save your tickets, and COVID-19 vaccination cards. It will be developed further to support digital identifications like driver’s licenses and car keys.  On top of that, Wallet also collaborates with other Google apps to enhance users’ experience and control over their digital wallets For example, if you are on a bus, you can instantly top up your transit card and see the balance if you are running low on a fare.

Moreover, the app will be available for Android users in over 40 countries in the upcoming few days. Since Google Pay is still up and running, users in the US and Singapore would have to use both Google Pay and Wallet to receive and transfer money from friends. As for the majority of countries, Wallet will replace the current Google Pay. Basically, Google Pay is still managing your transaction while Wallet working alongside it to provide other functions mentioned earlier until it is further developed in the future.

5G Network Will Be Provided to 1,000 Schools By Year-End

Reading Time: 2 minutes read

As education becomes more intertwined with technology, there is a great demand for better connectivity and accessibility. Well, the school would be a great place to start in providing these privileges. In the Covid-19 era, most classrooms have opted for virtual learning which includes video calls or digital learning platforms. But, the process of virtual learning is often disrupted due to poor connections or the lack of access to a high-quality network.

Based on the recent announcement by Tan Sri Annuar Musa, it looks like this issue has been addressed and a solution is on its way.

According to Bernama, the Communications and Multimedia Minister said that 1000 selected schools throughout the country are expected to be provided with a 5G network. Even better, this also includes schools in rural areas.

At the moment, the ministry is still waiting for approval from the Education Ministry to implement the initiative.  In addition, Tan Sri Annuar Musa stated that he already discussed this with the  Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB). The involved parties have given their commitment to making this initiative a success.

In conjunction with that, five or six schools have been selected “under the starting concept to test the capacity of the 5G network,”. Although the exact name of the school and areas in which the coverage would be available have yet to be revealed, pretty sure the updates will be made known to the public once the initiative is approved.
