Reading Time: < 1 minute read

The sudden power outage experienced by the majority of states in Malaysia this afternoon has not only affected houses and buildings but also some of the RapidKL rail services including the Ampang and Sri Petaling LRT lines and other service providers like Digi and Unifi. According to a Twitter thread, some of the states that are affected by the blackout include Penang, Kedah, Kelantan, Pahang, Negeri Sembilan, and also Perak.

Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) recently updated that at 3:02, they have successfully restored the power to all the affected areas. TNB also stated that the power outage that occurred at 12.39 pm was caused by the damage to Yong Peng North Transmission Main Intake (PMU Yong Peng) station in Yong Peng, Johor. This resulted in a 2.2GW loss of electricity, affecting up to 10% of Peninsular Malaysia’s electricity supply.

TNB on a Facebook post has apologized for all inconveniences caused during the blackout and people who are affected or have any inquiries may contact the TNB Careline at 15454.

Purchase Windows 11 License For RM919

Reading Time: < 1 minute read

When Microsoft launched Windows 11, the only way you can get it was to either upgrade from Windows 10 or buy a pre-built PC. However, Windows 11 licences unexpectedly appeared on the Microsoft Store recently. The company confirmed that, instead of upgrading the version from Windows 10, you can now purchase the license and download it directly from the Microsoft website.

Source: Microsoft

It appears that Microsoft quietly began selling Windows 11 licences on its store a few weeks ago. Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine estimated that the option is made available sometime in May. Furthermore, Windows 11 Home cost the same as Windows 10 licences. In Malaysia, it is priced at RM919. On the other hand, the pricing for Windows 11 Pro license will cost you RM1299.

The new store listings largely benefit users who customize their own PCs, need to purchase a new licence, and want to install Windows 11 right away. There are two ways to install Microsoft’s latest operating system which are to update from within Windows 10 or to purchase a PC that includes Windows 11.

If you feel like upgrading your PC to the latest OS, you can purchase  Windows 11 through the Microsoft website.

Qwork Completes Pre-Series A Round And Is Looking To Expand In Singapore

Reading Time: 2 minutes read

Qwork has completed its pre-series A investment from strategic investors, allowing it to expand beyond Malaysia and Indonesia and possibly into Singapore, as well as introduce its new product, Qwork SaaS.

“This round of funding will enable us to grow bigger and further to helping gig workers around the region and to rethink the way they organise their lives seek more meaningful careers and ask for healthier work environments,” said Muna Munirah, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Qwork.

She further added, “The gig economy will improve in the future to become more sustainable for all stakeholders, including talent, businesses, government bodies, and non-governmental organisations.”

“By harnessing the potential of the gig economy, Qwork’s solution will assist businesses in adopting gig workers in roles that we never thought could be done by gigs before,” said Mr Henry, one of Qwork’s strategic investors.

Qwork has paid out over RM10 million to gig workers and supported businesses in saving up to 60% on operating costs in the five years since its launch. This is due to the fact that the Great Resignation has highlighted the importance of how the gig workforce may be more dependable to firms.

As the gig economy continues to evolve, Qwork is encouraging people to rethink how they organise their lives, pursue more meaningful careers and request healthier work environments. The traditional work environment has failed to provide them with the opportunity to reach their full potential. With the gig economy, workers now have the ability to control their lives.

According to the 2021 Employee Movement and Retention report released by Employment Hero, over 60% of Malaysian workers are planning on looking for a new job within the next year. The report also noted that younger workers aged 35 and under are more likely to leave their current jobs.

Surprisingly, according to a survey of 1,004 Malaysian employees, 45% of employees enjoy their jobs. Only a minority (4%) say they detest or loathe their job, while 24% say they love it. This suggests that the issue is not with the work itself.

The most common factors for leaving are a lack of career advancement (36%), a lack of appreciation or recognition (27%), and a lack of training opportunities (26%). Other factors include a lack of wage raises, management issues, feeling overworked, and a lack of flexibility.

Despite the epidemic, Payoneer reports that the Philippines, India, Japan, Australia, and Hong Kong are the top five fastest-growing freelancing countries. They all have one thing in common: they are all in Asia-Pacific, where gig economy transactions are likely to expand by >17% CAGR to $455 billion by 2023, according to a Mastercard report.

TikTok Users Have The Chance To Earn Up To RM650 Through Referral Rewards Program

Reading Time: 2 minutes read

The first thing that popped up on your screen right now the moment you open TikTok is the referral reward that you can win. So you must be wondering if it’s real? Can you really earn the money?

The answer is yes!

TikTok finally decided to roll out a referral rewards program in Malaysia that enables users to earn money up to RM650. All you have to do is invite friends or other people to join the app. In other countries, this program has been available for quite some time but it just entered Malaysia this month.

But don’t get excited just yet because at the moment, not all accounts have this program and the reward amount may vary from one user to another. For instance, it appears that some accounts can earn RM55 while others can earn up to RM65 when people used their referral code.

For those who might think ‘this is quite easy’ well hold that thought. To earn these rewards, the new user who joined the TikTok app through a referral code must at least view 30 minutes of content per day for 10 days straight. So, if you get 10 people to join and fulfilled the mentioned requirements, you will be able to earn up to RM 550 or RM650, depending on your account.

Once you have success, TikTok stated that the reward can be withdrawn to your PayPal or bank account. However, it only limits you to withdraw once a day. You can check out your TikTok account to see whether you are eligible to join the referral program. Other than that, you can also visit TikTok’s official website for further info on the rewards.

The Alert Slider Is No Longer Available On OnePlus 10T

Reading Time: < 1 minute read

The OnePlus chief designer Hope Liu clarified the removal of the alert slider on the OnePlus 10T. Previously, the launch date of the smartphone was announced and its specifications are discussed.

However, recently there is a small alteration made regarding the device’s design. Liu explained that removing the internal slider is a necessary move so that the 10T will have enough internal space for other components which are needed for high wattage charging, larger battery capacity and enhanced antenna signal.

The alert slider has been one of the main components in the previous OnePlus devices. The slider makes it easier for users to set their phones to silent or vibrate modes without having to turn on the screen.

Liu added that the alert slider has a large impact on the device’s motherboard despite it being a very small component. Retaining the slider would add to the device thickness as they have to stack the motherboard.

In addition, more room must be made for the charging components to achieve better-charging speeds. Other than that, OnePlus also decides to put 15 separate antennas to enhance the signal of the device.

Other features will be fully revealed during the launch of the OnePlus 10T which will be held on the upcoming 3 August.

You could soon turn your Chromebooks into Wi-Fi hotspots

Reading Time: < 1 minute read

Turning on the hotspot on your phone to connect it with your Chromebooks when you are out of reach from a nearby Wi-Fi connection might be troublesome since the hotspot feature is most likely to drain your phone’s battery. In the upcoming Chromebook update, it seems like Google is developing a feature that will solve this issue.

According to 9to5google, the new feature will allow your Chromebook with mobile data to host a Wi-Fi hotspot for other devices such as phones or tablets. As compared to a mobile phone, Chromebook has a much larger battery capacity so it ensures longer connectivity for your devices (as long as you have enough data that is).

At the moment, the details about the functions are still slim but we can imagine it would work like the mobile hotspot feature that is available on Android phones today. The feature should allow you to set up the name and password for your Chromebook’s hotspot in the Settings app in ChromeOS. From there, you can choose to toggle the hotspot off or on.

The feature could be the most anticipated update for Chromebook users since it offers convenience, especially for people who always move around and struggle to find connectivity to do their work.

You are able to check the availability of the feature by scrolling down on Setel’s home page until the Parking icon shows up. After tapping on it, you will be given two options to choose namely ‘Street Parking’ or ‘Automated Parking Payments’. In the Street Parking section, you can tap on the ‘Park Now’ button and your current location will be automatically pinned down on the map.

Other than that, you can also pin the location by searching for the three municipal councils and once your location is confirmed, you can select the vehicle, set the parking duration and just Press Pay to proceed with the payment. Much like TNG eWallet, it requires you to enter your Setel passcode to confirm the transaction. If you feel like extending the parking session, click on the ‘Extend Duration’ button, set the additional time and proceed with the payment.

It seems like Setel is on its way to being the one-stop centre app with all the convenient features ranging from lifestyle to vehicle offerings. No more switching between apps to do several things at once.

Government Hospitals and Clinics Will Only Accept Cashless Payment From Oct 1

Reading Time: < 1 minute read

According to a circular issued by the ministry’s secretary-general Harjeet Singh, starting from October 1, all government hospitals and clinics under the Ministry of Health (MoH) will only accept cashless payment methods. In addition, payment methods involving debit and credit cards as well as e-wallets will be accepted in all government health facilities.

There are several reasons for the transition which include minimizing the risk of leakage of public funds, ensuring more efficient and smooth counter services, cutting operational costs and processes as well as reducing the risk of Covid-19 transmission.

However, if the patient does not own any access to digital payments or bank accounts, cash payments would still be allowed. Moreover, Harjeet added that by the end of the year, the ministry predicts that 95% of transactions in its health facilities to be cashless.
