Xiaomi’s Humanoid Robot ‘CyberOne’ Can Detect Human Emotions

Reading Time: 2 minutes read

Xiaomi’s first humanoid robot, CyberOne, made its debut at the company’s new product launch event in Beijing, alongside other innovative products.

CyberOne, the newest member of Xiaomi’s Cyber series, joins last year’s quadruped robot Cyberdog with advanced arms and legs, bipedal-motion posture balancing, and a peak torque of up to 300Nm. The ability to detect human emotion, advanced vision capabilities, and functionality allowing it to create three-dimensional virtual reconstructions of the real world, among other advanced technologies, were also demonstrated.

The humanoid robot stands 177cm tall and weighs 52kg, with a 168cm arm span. It is more mechanically complex than a quadruped robot, entailing more powerful motors, more degrees of freedom, and complex humanoid biped control algorithms. CyberOne can mimic human movements with up to 21 degrees of freedom in motion and a real-time response time of 0.5ms for each degree of freedom.

On top of that, Xiaomi also developed a high-efficiency motor weighing only 500g with a rated output torque of up to 30Nm for the upper limb joint motor to ensure the flexibility of CyberOne’s upper limbs. The hip joint motor can produce an instantaneous peak torque of up to 300Nm.

Intriguingly, CyberOne can also sense 3D space and recognise individuals, gestures, and expressions with the help of a self-developed Mi-Sense depth vision module combined with an AI interaction algorithm.

ย In terms of communication, the robot is outfitted with a self-developed MiAI environment semantics recognition engine and a MiAI vocal emotion identification engine, allowing it to recognise 85 different types of environmental sounds and 45 different human emotion classifications. CyberOne can detect happiness and even comfort the user when he or she is sad. All of these features are built into CyberOne’s processing units, which are linked to a curved OLED module to display real-time interactive data.

Xiaomi is making its first ventures into the field, while CyberOne is constantly expanding its capabilities. “We think that intelligent robots will definitely be a part of people’s lives in the future,” Lei Jun said.ย
