The Pixel Watch 3 has just added a rather groundbreaker of a feature, Loss of Pulse Detection. It will detect a pulse loss in the wearer, which is a serious medical emergency. The watch thus sends an alert to the Wearer with a timer to respond, after which, if there’s no response, the Watch Automatically Contacts Emergency Services with the Wearer’s Location.

Such conditions as cardiac arrest or even an overdose can cause a person to lose their pulse. The new feature in Google is said to help at the very right time. According to Dr. Jake Sunshine, a research scientist at Google, this feature was developed with emergencies in mind, where no one else is around to assist in such emergencies.

Accurate pulse loss tracking is facilitated by the sensors in the Pixel Watch 3 and machine learning algorithms. Google consulted with Emergency Medical Services and many other experts to further refine and fine-tune its response in case of such emergencies on this feature.

While most smartwatches boast safety features that detect falls, the Pixel Watch 3 boasts the first-ever Loss of Pulse Detection. Availability will be in many European countries; it still needs approval from the FDA for use within the United States.

If anything, according to Google, no feature is ever perfect. Loss of Pulse Detection represents a step ahead. Setting new standards, the feature with life-threatening emergency uses may open up the scope for wearable health technology.

New iOS 18.1 Update Grants NFC Access to Third-Party Apps

Apple plans to expand access to Near Field Communication, or NFC, in iOS 18.1 for third-party developers. Update to allow the execution of contactless payment systems via API by developers. This comes after Apple’s settlement with the European Commission to bring itself in line with EU regulations. The issue is concerns it was squeezing rival mobile wallet developers.

With iOS 18.1, Apple will let the developer community leverage an iPhone’s Secure Element for contactless transactions. That chip safely stores this information; it’s the same one that Apple Pay uses. That’s where the Secure Enclave takes care of the encryption and biometric data in a secure way.

More than just tap-to-pay, NFC will support a wide array of features like digital car keys, transit cards, or even home locks. Updates coming shortly will add support for government IDs, therefore bringing increased convenience to users.

Apple NFC

Apple is making developers sign a commercial agreement for access to NFC. This will necessitate requesting an entitlement to both NFC and the Secure Enclave, along with the associated fees for the latter. Apple Pay and Apple Wallet will coexist with third-party systems.

It will be available in the US, EU, and several other regions including Australia, Brazil, Canada, Japan, and New Zealand. It also allows developers to be able to integrate their systems into the iOS settings for seamless user experiences.

X Enhances Security with Passkeys for Android Users

Reading Time: < 1 minute read

X is now announcing support for passkeys within its Android app. This update comes right after the rollout of passkeys for iOS users in the US earlier in the year. Passkeys are much more secure compared to traditional passwords, and they allow the use of digital credentials that are hard to guess or steal.

Passkeys have been in huge favor from tech companies and online services in the past few years. This feature strengthens the protection of accounts, making them less prone to unauthorized access. Even password managers have started integrating passkey options for their users.

Passkeys

X users must do a bit of setup upfront. The first thing you’re going to do is create an account with a regular password. Log in, then click on the Security tab. Click “Additional password protection,” and you’ll turn on the passkey for added security.

Once enabled, passkeys will make the process of login easier and enhance the safety of accounts. This new feature is a prime example of how X is dedicated to increasing the security of its users on all platforms. While it will take a little time to shift entirely to passkeys, it will save them a lot in the long run.

In short, after the implementation of passkey support on Android, X is riding a rising wave of change in online security—stronger authentication and better protection for users.
