Gemini AI Transforms Gmail with Innovative Q&A Feature

Google’s Gemini AI is now part of Gmail for Android. Gmail Q&A is a new feature designed to make your inbox management go more smoothly. With the Gemini button right in front of you, you’ll be able to summarize all the emails and find what you need or show messages from particular senders. This tool brings the same functionality on mobile that’s been on the web.

Gemini AI

To activate Gemini on the Gmail app, tap on the star at the top right. Or use the “summarize this email” button inside an email. Currently, it searches only your inbox, but Google says it will roll out the capability on your Google Drive soon.

The Gemini AI feature starts rolling out today, and it might take up to 15 days to reach all the users. It will also be available to Google Workspace customers with add-ons particular to their setup or users who have the Google One AI Premium plan. The whole goal of it is to make managing email easier because it keeps your inbox less cluttered.

During testing, Gemini did well in summarizing emails and drafting new ones for me, though sometimes it misunderstood requests – listing unrelated concerts when I asked for a list of upcoming ones, for instance, even though it pulled the ticket information into my email correctly. But despite these growing pains, Gemini is a big step toward making email easier.

Taken together, Gmail Q&A wants to make your inbox feel less intimidating. With the rollout of Gemini on mobile, Google takes another step in making high-level AI more seamless across its services.

Here’s Why Apple Cuts Off Volume Control for Spotify

Spotify has lost the ability to control the volume of music with the use of the iPhones’ physical buttons. This was because Apple killed the technology that was used to make this function possible, forcing Spotify users to go into the app to adjust the volume control manually. However, Bluetooth and AirPlay connections remain unaffected by this change.

volume control

Currently, Spotify Connect clients can only access an in-app volume slider, which is infinitely less convenient. According to TechCrunch reports, the bug also impacts Google Cast on iOS. Spotify says it is going to work with Apple for a fix, but for now, you’re going to have to use the app to make adjustments.

Spotify contends that the decision violates the Digital Markets Act, a law targeting “gatekeepers” who are guilty of unfair practices. The company said Apple limits interoperability to push for integration with HomePods. The dispute marks the latest point of tension between the two tech giants over control of their platforms.

Spotify is still committed to finding a solution that will see them restore full functionality to iPhone users. While this is so, the company calls upon users to be a bit patient as they work themselves around this temporary inconvenience. The service is still challenging the practices of Apple, an indication of the ongoing battle in the tech industry.

HMD Barbie Phone with Modern Features Launching October 2024

Reading Time: 2 minutes read

HMD has officially announced the Barbie Phone, a flip phone inspired by Mattel’s highly popular toy franchise. Dubbed “the perfect tool to live your best life,” it promises a respite from dependency on smartphones. The Barbie Phone does not ship with social media apps and doesn’t even support data-based connectivity, making things all so nostalgic.

Barbie Phone

It is a phone with a peculiarly pink design, signaling its Barbie theme. It also boasts a 1.77-inch external screen with a reflective surface for framing selfies. The 0.3MP camera, complete with flash, allows one to seize the moment without much ado.

Inside, the Barbie Phone includes a 2.8-inch display and a T9 keypad with glows. Yes, it looks retro, but it has some pretty modern features underneath: a USB-C charging port, a digital well-being app, and Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity. FM radio, MP3 music, and a 3.5mm headphone jack are also there.

Barbie Phone

Other accessories add to the charm of the Phone. It comes with two back covers, a pink-colored USB-C cable, and a beaded phone strap. And if those weren’t enough, it also includes several stickers and stick-on gems.

Barbie Phone

The Barbie Phone is launching in the US on October 1 priced at $129 (~RM560). While there’s no word when this will be released in Malaysia, it has already made an appearance on HMD Malaysia’s website, so it shouldn’t be too long. Locally, no pricing details have been revealed yet.

New Circle to Search Update: Save Images from Chrome Lens

Reading Time: 2 minutes read

Perhaps the most dynamic feature from Google this year has been Circle to Search or CtS. Starting to roll out in January to the Pixel 8 series, it continued to gain major features like instant translation and split-screen functionality up through April. Google continued to enhance CtS with things like barcode scanning and music identification this year.

Circle to Search

Meanwhile, Circle to Search also graduated onto Chrome under the Google Lens branding. Available via the Chrome address bar, it allows users to begin reverse image searches either by dragging their mouse or selecting images or text on their screens. Its early days gave more general search results but included an “add to your search” box for a more narrowed-up search.

Circle to Search

Updates as of late seem to iron out the UI for a more CtS-like experience. For instance, the new UI includes a hazy, multicolored full-screen overlay to give it that CtS look. This advancement cleans up the UI and suggests that Google is getting ready to roll out some new features for Lens on Chrome.

Being able to save circled search queries as images would have, though, been a feature expected. Currently, for Android users, it’s possible to circle the elements, share them, or save them as images. Chrome Lens extracts or translates the text of the selected area alone.

According to Chrome researcher @Leopeva64 on X, similar functionality is coming to Lens on Chrome as well. The Chrome changelog does mention that it should soon support saving and copying of selected regions as images, too, though the UI implementation hasn’t gone live yet.

Quick Settings Wallet Tile Now Available with Google’s Latest Update

Reading Time: 2 minutes read

Google has announced a new Quick Settings tile for Google Wallet. The feature forms part of the latest update of Google Play Services, published with version 24.33. Android devices already possessed a Quick Settings tile for Wallet. Nonetheless, the new tile is created to function independently from the old system-level feature.

Quick Settings

Since Android 12, manufacturers could remove the Quick Access Wallet tile. The new tile will make sure that users can still access Wallet quickly in case the old tile is blocked or when your phone runs an older version of Android. This update will provide consistent access to Wallet across different devices.

The refresh to Play Services also includes refreshed functionality for transit cards. While the exact details aren’t clear, it would seem Wallet’s going to let users nickname their transit cards. This is one of those feature additions designed to make using transit options easier to deal with in Wallet.

Quick Settings

Other than that, it also includes Wear OS Support for Digital Car Key. This feature integrates into Pixel Watch 3 so you will now be able to use your smartwatch as a digital car key. The popularity of smartwatches is now getting closer to everyday tech utilization.

These updates thus complement the functionality of Google Wallet and make it more versatile and user-friendly across different devices and operating systems.

Instagram New Feature: Real-Time Spotify Music Notes Integration

Reading Time: 2 minutes read

Recently, Alessandro Paluzzi discovered the code that points to one all-new feature, real-time integration with Spotify. It looks like this integration will create Spotify song Notes on Instagram automatically. Those Notes would appear above your inbox and your profile picture, where users can see them when tapping into your profile.

Real-Time Spotify Integration

Currently, it is possible to manually add Spotify tracks to the Notes or Stories on Instagram. This is not entirely new, the same functionality is already there in Discord. However, the integration of such real-time activity on Gram would be huge in comparison with other existing options.

However, Instagram is not a messaging or chat platform, most of its users are not on for that much time. As such, some may argue that real-time music sharing on the platform has relatively low usefulness. Typically, users will be spending far less time on Instagram compared to services like Discord.

Real-Time Spotify Integration

If realized, the feature could closer tie Spotify together with Instagram. In this sense, sharing tastes in music would become far more dynamic and spontaneous. However, the very nature of the way Instagram is used may greatly limit this in terms of practical utility.

Taking it all into consideration, the idea of integrating real-time Spotify music right within Instagram is cool, but its success could still be up for debate. How well this will work depends on how users take it up and fit it into the already existing experiences on Instagram.

Pavel Durov Arrested and Charged in France

Reading Time: 2 minutes read

French prosecutors have filed charges against Telegram CEO Pavel Durov, citing “complicity in distributing child pornography, illegal drugs, and hacking software” on Telegram. The charge further alleges that Durov “refused to cooperate with investigations into illegal activity” on his platform, The Wall Street Journal reports.

Pavel Durov

In that respect, Durov was arrested outside Paris on Saturday and released after he posted bail of €5 million. During the ongoing investigation, he is not allowed to leave France. He is also supposed to report to a police station twice a week.

The investigation may take several months or even years to finish. In that respect, Pavel Durov will stay in France for the time being. Since he is a person who travels frequently, it is a considerable change for him.

Pavel Durov

Telegram dismissed the charges against Mr. Durov as “absurd.” It says he cannot be held liable for what users do on the app. The continuing legal dispute threatens to affect how Telegram operates and Durov’s future.

The case reflects a broader debate over the liability of digital platforms. As courts rule, that decision could affect other leaders in the technology sector.
