Sony launches world’s first AI image sensor

Reading Time: 3 minutes read

When it comes to smartphone, the main camera sensors we can see smartphones been using is either from Samsung or Sony. Except for Huawei, it uses their camera sensors from Leica. Up until now, there aren’t any camera sensors which comes with Artificial Intelligence (AI). Well, Sony launches the world’s first AI image sensor.

The AI image sensor comes in two models which are IMX500 and IMX501. It is called the Intelligent Vision Sensor. Both of these models comes in 12.3-megapixel sensor. What makes it special is the Intelligent Vision Sensors which comes with the AI chip on board. If you compared the current image sensors from Samsung or Leica, they do the AI image processing through the smartphone chipset only.

But for the Sony Intelligent Vision sensor, the AI processing is being done in the chip itself. This causes the time taken to do the image processing is faster compared to the current situation. Comparing with other camera sensors they have to send the data to the cloud. This where it does the AI processing.

Sony Intelligent Vision Sensor Use Cases

Sony has given a brief explanation regarding its latest image sensor use cases. According to Sony, its latest image sensor able to track an object in real-time with its AI chip on board. One of the use cases is the Amazon cashier-less Go as one of the potential application. The current Amazon cashier-less Go is having hundreds of camera in order to track its shoppers. If Amazon uses the Intelligent Vision Sensors, then they wouldn’t need hundreds of camera. Instead, they can use Sony AI image sensors to track the shoppers and charge them based on the items they have taken from the shelves.

Another use case for this AI image sensor would be detecting where a person is wearing a mask. For this current COVID-19 pandemic, Sony can immediately roll out its camera sensors to multiple locations. With its powerful AI chip, it can allow the camera to send either “yes” or “no” to the authorities. Apart from that, in a shopping mall, these AI image sensor can be useful to know the customer behaviours by using heat mapping. With heat mapping, the shopping mall management can know which shops the customers like to visit.

World’s first AI image sensor on a smartphone

According Sony VP of Business and Innovation, Mark Hanson, Sony has been the smartphone market for a quite some time. It has more than 60 percent market share up until now. He also added that Apple’s iPhone 11 Pro uses the image sensor from Sony. Sony has shipped 1.6 billion sensors for smartphones. With this new AI image sensor, we can expect Apple to be one of the first smartphone makers to use the latest AI image sensor from Sony.

In conclusion, the Sony Intelligent Visions Sensors could be really useful for both end users and also business users. According to Sony, the IMX501 sample units could be shipped to the smartphone makers some time around June 2020. We can’t wait to see how smartphone makers are going to use the world’s first AI image sensor on their products.

Facebook launches its own avatar in the United States

Reading Time: 2 minutes read

Bitmoji is famously known as Bitstrips back in 2012, where we can see many people creating their own comic strip on their Facebook. Now, on Facebook, we have the Stickers which widely many people are using it when they post a comment on a post. Later in 2014, Bitstrips is renamed to Bitmoji and that’s when it has been one of the most downloaded apps on Facebook. Just today, Facebook launches the Bitmoji-like avatars in the United States.

Before the United States, Facebook first launches its own Avatar in Europe. Since Bitmoji has been acquired by Snapchat, Facebook couldn’t use Bitmoji technology on its platform. So that’s the reason Facebook developed its own Bitmoji-like avatar. At first, we were expecting something like Memoji on the Apple iOS ecosystem. Unfortunately, the Avatar is still a sticker similar to Bitmoji. Only that you can customize it thoroughly similar to Apple’s Memoji.

Similar to Bitmoji, people in the United States and Europe can use the Facebook Avatars in Stories. Besides that, Facebook also allows you to use its Avatars to comment on a post and obviously in the Facebook Messenger too. Facebook is trying to compete with Snapchat. Even back when Facebook introduces Stories, Snapchat was the first tech company to introduce the Stories feature. And now, Snapchat even launches its own Bitmoji TV where the Bitmoji characters plays a role in the cartoons.

How to create your Facebook Avatar?

If both are similar then people rather will be using Snapchat Bitmoji. That’s the reason Facebook makes the Avatars different than the Snapchat Bitmoji. Facebook will allow you to create your own avatar easily. All you need to do is click on the comment where you can insert the stickers. And from there you should be able to view the new button “Create Your Avatar”.

Then you can easily customize your avatar to your favourite choice. You can even set your hair colour or hairstyle with Facebook Avatars. However, in Bitmoji you can’t really customize it thoroughly. You can also customize the outfit for your avatar similarly to Apple’s Memoji feature.

In conclusion, there isn’t any confirmation yet whether Facebook will be rolling out Facebook Avatars to other countries. We will give it a try once it is available in Malaysia though. The Facebook Avatars is now available for both iOS and Android devices.

Leak claims iPhone 12 to feature 120Hz ProMotion display

Reading Time: 3 minutes read

Apple’s iPhone 12 is the next big thing, guys! Trust me if this phone launches according to the leaks, surely you will be seeing an unboxing and review video on our TMQ tech channel. The latest leak we have for you guys is the upcoming iPhone 12 will be featuring the 120Hz ProMotion display.

Thanks to both EverythingApplePro and Max Weinbach for sharing us the news for the iPhone 12 series. Regarding the ProMotion display, this is the exact technology where the latest 2020 iPad Pro has. And now, Apple will be bringing this latest technology to the iPhone 12 series. According to EverythingApplePro, the ProMotion display will only be available on the both the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max.

The latest OnePlus 8 Pro features the exact 120Hz refresh rate display. With the 120Hz display, you can have a seamless swipe and scroll. But it looks like for Apple it is doing something different. The Pro models iPhone will be supporting both 120Hz and 60Hz, where it will switch by itself depending on the content you are viewing. The moment, when you switch to a 120Hz display, on any smartphone the battery of the phone will be draining quickly. That’s the purpose Apple comes with this kind of feature for the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max.

Apart from that, as expected Apple will also be increasing the battery size for the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max. The main reason could be the 120Hz ProMotion display. By watching the video from EverythingApplePro, it looks like Apple has decided to increase the iPhone 12 Pro’s battery size to 4,400mAh. Besides that, from the rendered images, we can see the shape of the battery which looks like a ‘L’ shape.

Apple will be using the A14 Bionic chip for the iPhone 12 series phones. This is something we can easily predict most of the time. With the upcoming A14 Bionic chip, Apple might be increasing the RAM size on the both Pro models. According to the leak, we can expect a huge jump from 4GB to 6GB. The A14 bionic chipset could also be supporting 5G network. Previously, there were rumours that Apple 5G iPhone will be delayed up to 2021. But now it seems like things are changing now.

The most recent update we have is on the Face ID. As we knew previously, the iPhone 12 models will be having a smaller notch. And now, Max Weinbach says that the Face ID sensor is becoming smaller now. At the same time, there will be a wider viewing angle on the Face ID sensor. This means you can easily unlock the iPhone 12 without even moving your face towards the display. Even when you are sitting the sensor is able to track your face because of the wide-angle viewing feature in the Face ID sensor. MacRumors reported that the new Face ID sensor also might be able to automatically adjust the orientation. This means, even when you are sleeping you can easily unlock your phone sideways.

For the cameras wise, it’s confirmed that LiDAR scanner will be added for the iPhone 12 Pro models. According to EverythingApplePro, previously Apple was testing the 64MP camera sensor for the iPhone 12 series smartphone. However, it seems like the engineers aren’t satisfied with the dual pixel autofocus. So for this upcoming iPhone 12, we still got to stick with the 12MP camera sensors.

Another leak news we have is there is going to be a new colour option. This was confirmed by Jon Prosser. Apple will be replacing the Midnight Green with the Navy Blue, which you can see from the EverythingApplePro iPhone 12 rendered video. If Apple really launches the Navy Blue, surely that is going to be a total hit.

In conclusion, here you have it the overall rumours for the iPhone 12 series. We are mainly excited about the design of the iPhone 12 and also the camera sensors. Let us know your thought on the iPhone 12 models.

The most used video messaging apps during COVID-19

Reading Time: 4 minutes read

Before the World Health Organization declares the COVID-19 as the global pandemic disease, many people were still continuing to work from their office. But no one expected that COVID-19 could be the unexpected disease which shook the worldwide economy. This has caused many people to work from home. Students were attending classes too by using video messaging apps such as Zoom.

During this pandemic, most of the people have started to use the video messaging apps to have their meetings. School students were excited because of the lockdown, but teenagers were sad because they can’t meet their friends. Youngsters were using WhatsApp to video call to meet their friends without leaving home.

This has caused the interest in video messaging client to increase up to five times than the usual usage. Research has been carried out by Picodi to find out which are the most used video messaging apps during the COVID-19 period. The research has been done by analysing the average numbers of online search queries of these video messaging clients. As we all know the most common video messaging apps are Line, Viber, WeChat, WhatsApp and the most recent ones, Zoom. The research team has even compared the result with other tech giants such as Facebook, Google and Microsoft. These data obtained through the Google Keyword Planner.

WhatsApp is the most used video messaging app

whatsapp

Based on their analysis, it is found that surprisingly, most of the Asia peoples tend to use WhatsApp more compared to Zoom, Line or WeChat. It was noticeable that Malaysia is one of the countries too which was using WhatsApp most of the time. We all already know that WhatsApp is the most popular messaging platform in the world. But what we didn’t expect was it is the most popular video messaging apps to in the Asia Pacific region.

Taking a look at the map below, it shows that 98% of the South-East Asia countries are using WhatsApp to video call their friends. Countries such as Indonesia, Singapore and even Papua New Guinea were using the WhatsApp video messaging app to communicate with their friends. But how about attending meetings or conference calls? It is for sure, you can’t attend meetings and conference calls using WhatsApp. That will be a total inappropriate. We are assuming, some companies could be using Skype for Business though to have their conference calls and meetings.

Apart from WhatsApp, there are a few countries which insisted on using Zoom app as the video messaging app. For example, countries such as Australia, Brunei and Japan are mostly using Zoom video messaging app to have their meetings. The reason could be, most probably those companies in these countries requires the employees to use video messaging app and the camera has to be turned on. Personally, I don’t like turning on my cameras during the conference calls.

Even though Zoom is not secure but still these countries insisted on using it

Did you know that recently security researchers found out that Zoom logins have been sold in the dark web? Yes, Zoom is not secure as it says it is. There are many complaints on the Zoom app. In countries such as Malaysia, there is even fake news saying that installing Zoom is allowing hackers to steal their money from their bank account. That doesn’t make sense at all. Maybe as the Zoom video messaging app is vulnerable your personal information can be collected but not your banking account guys. Beware of this type of fake news.

Well, it’s pretty obvious that countries such as Thailand and Taiwan are still using Line as their favourite video messaging apps recently during this COVID-19 global pandemic outbreak. On the other hand, both Bhutan and Myanmar prefers to use WeChat and Viber respectively. To be honest, it has been for years, we hear that people are still using Viber or WeChat. Maybe WeChat there are still groups of people likes to use it but not Viber. The reason people could be using Viber instead of WhatsApp is because of their network availability in a certain region of Myanmar.

In a nutshell, it is crystal clear that WhatsApp is the most used video messaging apps during this global pandemic COVID-19 period. Maybe if we continue the research up until today then probably, Zoom could be the most used video messaging apps out of these video messaging apps.

Reading Time: 3 minutes read

The rumours of LG unveiling a smartphone has been going around lately. It has been two years since LG unveils a new smartphone. Many people were saying that LG is not keeping up to the trend because the smartphone which LG launches didn’t go on well. But, now LG is stepping up the paddle once again to compete with other smartphone makers. LG finally unveils the luxurious midrange smartphone called the LG Velvet.

The name itself sounds luxurious, so do the phone design. Upfront the LG Velvet features a 6.8″ OLED display with a tiny notch at the top center which houses the front selfie camera. The LG Velvet also comes with IP68 rating where it is dustproof and waterproof. You can bring the LG Velvet even for swimming and it still works fine.

Another thing to note about the design is it has a military standard approved by the US Department of Defence. This means the smartphone is durable where you can drop at any heights and still it works. Not to forget about the fingerprint scanner. When we take a look at the design of the LG Velvet, we could find the fingerprint scanner neither at the rear nor at the sides. This makes us conclude that the LG Velvet has an in-display fingerprint scanner.

At the camera section, the luxurious midrange smartphone, LG Velvet features an array of triple camera setup. LG is calling it the raindrop cameras. If you watched the LG Velvet invitational video, that’s how LG promoted the LG Velvet. And also if you take a look at the camera design it indeed looks as if it is a rain droplet. From small droplets to big droplets. It is easy to identify which one is the main camera.

First of all, similar to other major midrange smartphones, the LG Velvet also comes with the 48MP main camera. Then the smaller droplet is the 8MP ultra-wide-angle camera. Whereas the smallest droplet is the 5MP depth sensor camera. Over at the front, the LG Velvet features 16MP front-facing selfie camera. Surprisingly, there is an additional feature called Autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR). Using this feature, you can record some sounds such as paper crippling sound and munching sound. We haven’t seen other smartphones comes with the ASMR feature which seems quite interesting though.

Under the hood, the LG Velvet has the latest chip from Qualcomm which is the Snapdragon 765 with 5G support. It comes with an 8GB of RAM and a 128GB of internal storage. You can expand the storage up to 2TB with the microSD card. Besides that, after such a long time, we are seeing the stylus back on the mid-range smartphone. For a mid-range smartphone, it also supports wireless charging too.

For the pricing wise, the LG Velvet is priced at ₩899,800 (RM3,196). Currently this luxurious mid-range phone is only available in South Korea. However, LG could be working on to release the LG Velvet globally too. We might need to wait for further updates from LG itself.

Due to its major security flaw found in it most of the US tech giants have banned their employees to use Zoom. Tech companies such as Google is encouraging its employees to use Google Meet to have their daily meetings. Besides that, even companies such as NASA and SpaceX has completely banned Zoom being used by their employees.

As for now, these 500,000 Zoom logins is being sold in the dark web for $6,250 (RM27,000). You might think $6,250 is expensive for Zoom logins, but there could be some high profile users details too in it. Hackers can use these details to exploit these 500,000 Zoom users easily. Each of the Zoom login is almost priced at $1.25 (RM5.40).

It is also reported that, back in December 2019, Zoom had 10 million daily users. Even on April, 300 million users are using Zoom video conferencing platform.

In conclusion, if by any chance you receive email from Zoom then you should know you are one of the victims too. Immediately change your passwords. Make sure to use a password with multiple characters rather than words.
