Following the launch of the 5G connectivity in Penang recently, it is announced that the Penang International Airport (PIA) is the country’s first international airport to be supplied with 5G network capabilities.ย
Launching the 5G facilities at the airport, State Transport and Infrastructure Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said the infrastructure would attract more investors to strengthen the digital economy in Penang.
Zairil further mentioned that the ongoing WCIT 2022 that started on September 13 until 15 is prompting the state to prioritise 5G connectivity at three locations: the Penang International Airport (PIA), Wisma Yeap Chor Ee, and Setia SPICE.
Regarding the connectivity speed, Zairil discovered that the speed inside the airport is ten times faster than 4G through a test done with his personal phone. Moreover, it is claimed that if it were tested outside of the airport, it would be 20 times faster, all thanks to YTL for being the first telecommunications provider to offer 5G services. It allows for internet speeds that exceed 120 Mbps for its customers.
Penang’s Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who launched the 5G ceremony two days ago at the UAB Building in George Town, promised that the new technology would increase the state’s commercial values while providing better, faster, and safer coverage for the consumers in Penang.ย
It is also reported that the state intends to build 463 sites, 228 on the island and 235 on the mainland, by June of next year.
