Back in May, the Penang government initiated a pilot test to create the 5G broadband range infrastructure at three locations in Georgetown.
Chow Kon Yeow, the chief minister, stated that the project is being implemented to test the readiness of local and state governments to receive 5G services, as well as the provision of necessary infrastructure.
In a Facebook post by Buletin Mutiara, it seems that the 5G connectivity is finally being launched in Penang starting on 9 September 2022. Chow made the long-awaited announcement during a launching event at the UAB Building in George Town. Penang is the most recent state to receive 5G coverage, and it is the first in Peninsular Malaysia’s northern region.
According to DNB’s coverage map, Penang Island currently has predominantly 5G coverage on the east side, which includes George Town, Jelutong, Gelugor, Bayan Lepas, and Batu Maung.
Chow stated 58 new 5G communications structures were built, while the remaining 93 were upgraded from existing structures. In addition, he also noted that phase two will see the installation of 235 5G status structures in Seberang Perai and 77 on the island, with a primary concentration on the northeast district.
With the deployment of 19 demonstration projects with seven telecommunications companies totalling RM23 million in 2020, Penang made a significant stride toward the supply of 5G services. Celcom Axiata, U Mobile, Digi Telecommunications, YTL Communications, Maxis Broadband, Telekom Malaysia, and edotco Malaysia were the seven telecommunications providers.
Chow also expressed his gratitude to YTL Communications for pioneering 5G service in Penang and achieving internet speeds of more than 120 Mbps. Are you excited about this 5G development? Share your experience with us!
