Unveiling the Evolution of iPhone Ports: USB-C Takes Center Stage

Reading Time: 3 minutes read

Everything that Apple announced during its Wanderlust event wasn’t that exciting as we already know what they are going to launch during this event. The main thing Apple fans are excited about is the long pending USB-C port availability. Apple has finally introduced a USB-C port for all the iPhone 15 that was launched this week. With that, we can say goodbye to the lightning port. No more cable clutters again.

Exploring the New USB-C Era

At first, looking at the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro sport USB-C ports at first glance, but upon closer inspection, they reveal subtle disparities. While both these ports can fulfil the standard functions of charging, data transfer, and audio-video output, it’s crucial to discern that the USB-C port on the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus adheres strictly to USB 2.0 standards. This translates to a maximum data transfer speed of 480Mbps.

This limitation can be attributed to the iPhone 15’s A16 Bionic processor, which mirrors the hardware configuration of the preceding iPhone 14 Pro lineup, lacking a dedicated USB 3 controller. In stark contrast, the iPhone 15 Pro, powered by the A17 Pro chip, boasts a USB 3 controller that empowers it to support lightning-fast data transfer speeds of up to 10Gbps. Although Apple hasn’t explicitly specified the exact USB 3 version, the 10Gbps rating hints at USB 3.2 Gen 2×1, given that USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 offers transfer speeds of up to 20Gbps.

Unveiling the Cable Conundrum

Regardless of whether you opt for an iPhone 15 or iPhone 15 Pro, the box will contain a USB-C to USB-C cable rated at USB 2.0. To unlock the full potential of the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max’s USB 3 capabilities, you’ll need an optional USB-C to USB-C cable that supports USB 3 with 10Gbps capabilities.

The benefits of investing in such a cable are abundant. With the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, you can harness the power of a USB 3-capable cable to connect to your Mac and seamlessly integrate with Capture One. This integration enables you to shoot and transfer ProRaw images instantly to your computer, enhancing your workflow efficiency. Additionally, these devices facilitate the connection of external drives via the USB-C cable, a boon for those engaging in ProRes video recording at up to 4K60 resolution. This obviates the need for splurging on the highest storage option when acquiring your new iPhone 15 Pro. Nevertheless, for most everyday users, the USB 3 capabilities might remain largely untapped, primarily serving the purpose of charging the device.

The Availability Dilemma

Surprisingly, as of this moment, Apple’s Malaysia store does not offer standalone USB 3 cables. Instead, the available options include USB 2 charging cables and Thunderbolt 4 USB-C cables. It’s crucial to note that Thunderbolt 4 cables, though versatile, offer an excess of capabilities for the 10Gbps transfer speeds supported by the iPhone 15 Pro. Furthermore, the standard 1-meter USB-C charging cable can deliver up to 60W of charging power, making it versatile enough to charge various Apple devices, from MacBooks to iPads, and even the latest AirPods 2nd Gen with USB-C charging, offering a convenient solution for your diverse charging needs.

The advent of USB-C in the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro lineup signifies a significant shift in Apple’s design philosophy. While the hardware remains consistent, the differentiation lies in the USB 3 capabilities, with the iPhone 15 Pro harnessing the full potential of this technology. To unlock the true prowess of your iPhone 15 Pro, consider investing in a USB-C to USB-C cable with USB 3 support, allowing you to elevate your photography and videography endeavours to new heights. As technology evolves, so does Apple’s ecosystem, and being prepared with the right accessories can make all the difference in maximizing your Apple experience.

iPhone Index 2023: Is Malaysia’s Man-Day Count Off the Charts? Find Out!

Reading Time: 2 minutes read

So, like, the folks over at Picodi Malaysia did this totally wild thing. They took the local iPhone 15 Pro (128 GB) prices and mashed them up with the average earnings. Then they came up with something called the iPhone Index, which is basically the price of the iPhone but in, get this, man-days!

iPhone Index 2023

So, in Malaysia, the basic version of the big shot iPhone 15 Pro (128 GB) goes for RM 5,499 (that’s RM 200 more than last year, folks). But wait, that’s not even the final price ’cause you gotta add sales tax on top of that. In the US, you only get that price in four states. In all the other states, they pile on the state and local sales tax, which can go up to a whopping 9.55%! In Malaysia, they got this thing called the goods and services tax, which is 5%.

Now, let’s get into the nitty-gritty. According to the latest Numbeo data, the average wage in Malaysia is RM 3,764.03 a month after taxes. So, if you squirrel away every single penny you make, it would take you about 30.7 man-days to snag that iPhone 15 Pro. And just to throw you for a loop, that’s 1.5 more man-days than last year!

Here’s the rollercoaster ride the iPhone Index has taken in Malaysia over the last six years:

  • 2018 – 41.3 days
  • 2019 – 30.1 days
  • 2020 – 29.1 days
  • 2021 – 30.3 days
  • 2022 – 29.2 days
  • 2023 – 30.7 days

But hey, Switzerland’s living the high life with an average Swiss person only needing 4.2 man-days to treat themselves to the latest iPhone. The average American needs 5.3 days, and Aussies are chillin’ with 6.3 days.

Now, let’s talk about the real shockers. Türkiye takes the cake as the worst in our ranking – a jaw-dropping 123.7 days of hard work for an iPhone. The next country in line is the Philippines and Brazil with 79.5 and 66.6 man-days respectively.

In conclusion, you have to save each and every penny of your salary to buy the iPhone 15 Pro if you are in Malaysia. Is it really worth saving that much for an iPhone? Share your comments below.

Apple’s first-ever USB-C iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max is here

Reading Time: 3 minutes read

I am sure today most of you were awake to know what Apple was announcing during its live event. Well, I was awake too. Every time in the month of September the main thing which Apple will reveal is their next generation iPhone series. Today Apple has officially unveiled the iPhone 15 series smartphones. For now, let’s take a look at the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max first.

FIRST OF ALL, USB-C IS HERE ON THE IPHONE 15 PRO

My first impression looking at the design of the iPhone 15 Pro is similar to its predecessor only. The major difference would be the material used in the enclosure is now TITANIUM instead of the stainless steel.

Then the mute switch has been replaced with the long-rumored Action button. To those of you who do not know about the action button please take a look at this video below. Back when Apple launched the Apple Watch Ultra, they added the Action button to it. Using the Action button, you can customize it according to your own preference.

With this new Action button on the iPhone 15 Pro, you can not only use it to mute your iPhone. But you can use it to enable your camera, torchlight, Do Not Disturb, etc. This is one of the interesting features Apple has introduced first time for the iPhone 15 Pro. So next time, I can simply configure my Action button to do other tasks as well using the Shortcut app.

Under the hood, Apple has introduced its new mobile chip called the A17 Pro. It looks like Apple has rebranded its Bionic chip to Pro chip now. Apple’s A17 Pro chip is packed with a 6-core CPU and 6-core GPU. The 6-core CPU is now 10% faster than the iPhone 14 Pro and then the 6-core GPU is now 20% faster. According to Apple, this GPU redesign is the biggest redesign in Apple’s history. And also for the first time, I think Apple is moving its focus towards mobile gaming as well. The neural engine is twice as fast now compared to the neural engine in the A16 Bionic chip. For those of you who are asking for extra storage, there is 1TB of storage now on the iPhone 15 Pro. But yeah, it comes with an expensive price for this storage option. The base storage option starts from 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB for the iPhone 15 Pro and 256GB onwards for the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

In the camera department, Apple still remains with its triple camera setup. First of all, there is the 48MP main camera. Then there is the 12MP ultra-wide camera with a 120-degree field of view. Lastly, there is the 12MP 3x telephoto camera. However, the major difference on the iPhone 15 Pro Max only comes with a 5x telephoto camera with 25x digital zoom. If you are a person who gives priority to the camera then maybe the iPhone 15 Pro Max is the best choice for you.

Pricing & Availability

The pricing of the base storage 128GB iPhone 15 Pro and 256GB iPhone 15 Pro Max starts from RM5,499 and RM6,499 respectively. The 1TB storage iPhone is priced at RM7,999 and RM8,499. According to Apple, the pre-order of the iPhone 15 Pro starts from 22nd September onwards and it’s available to purchase at all Apple Resellers on 29th September. The iPhone 15 Pro comes in four premium colors which are black titanium, white titanium, blue titanium, and natural titanium.

In conclusion, this is the first-ever USB-C iPhone you can start purchasing soon. For more information visit Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro website. Next, we will share with you about the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus details. Stay tuned for more updates from us.

Boosting Malaysia’s Startup Ecosystem: Cradle Fund and Bursa Malaysia Join Forces

In a significant development for Malaysia’s burgeoning startup scene, YB Tuan Chang Lih Kang, the Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, presided over the signing of a Memorandum of Collaboration (MoC) between Cradle Fund Sdn. Bhd. (Cradle), the nation’s leading early-stage startup agency, and Bursa Malaysia Berhad (Bursa Malaysia).

The MoC ceremony saw Norman Matthieu Vanhaecke, Acting Group Chief Executive Officer of Cradle, and Aina Zahari, Director of Corporate Strategy at Bursa Malaysia, symbolically exchange the agreement. This MoC has a dual purpose: to raise awareness among startups about the various funding opportunities available in Malaysia, including those provided by the equity market, and to streamline the identification of companies with the potential to list on Bursa Malaysia.

An Integral Component of the Fund Funnel Programme

This collaboration is a pivotal component of the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation’s (MOSTI) Fund Funnel programme. This initiative is specifically designed to simplify funding options and provide comprehensive support to startups throughout their funding journey, from the seed stage to the initial public offering (IPO) stage.

The Fund Funnel programme is closely aligned with Intervention Two of the Malaysia Startup Ecosystem Roadmap (SUPER) 2021-2030, which underscores the need to revamp the local investment ecosystem for greater efficiency, attract high-quality investments, and enhance funding accessibility for startups.

YB Tuan Chang highlighted the significance of this collaboration, stating, “The Fund Funnel addresses the concerns raised by startups regarding the lack of information about government funding opportunities, at the same time, providing clear and concise details about the funding agencies and the specific stages at which they offer financial support. As we introduce the Fund Funnel programme, Malaysia embarks on a transformative journey to fulfil the aspirations outlined in the Malaysia Startup Ecosystem Roadmap.”

Empowering Startups for Success

Norman Matthieu Vanhaecke, Acting Group Chief Executive Officer of Cradle, emphasized that this partnership signifies an ongoing commitment to engage with ecosystem players and enhance transparency in Bursa Malaysia’s listing requirements. He expressed the hope that this collaboration would empower startups to develop comprehensive strategies, ultimately facilitating successful listings on the exchange while bridging critical funding gaps within the ecosystem.

With its two decades of experience in the startup ecosystem, Cradle will provide valuable market intelligence on local startups to assist Bursa Malaysia in identifying potential listing candidates. This partnership capitalizes on Cradle’s track record of supporting over 1,000 Malaysian technology-based firms, boasting one of the highest commercialization rates among funding agencies in Malaysia.

Bursa Malaysia, on the other hand, will leverage the data shared by Cradle to organize programs focused on funding access. Additionally, Bursa Malaysia will offer knowledge sharing and guidance to help startups grasp how the equity market can contribute to their growth, a critical factor in planning their journey from early-stage startups to becoming publicly listed companies.

Tan Sri Abdul Wahid Omar, Chairman of Bursa Malaysia, underlined the intent of the Exchange to assist Cradle in building a thriving startup ecosystem and addressing a common challenge faced by local startups – access to funding opportunities. The collaboration aims to facilitate Malaysia startups in their funding journey, accelerate their growth, and enable them to list on the domestic exchange.

In conclusion, this collaborative effort between Cradle Fund and Bursa Malaysia represents a significant step forward for Malaysia’s startup ecosystem. By enhancing funding accessibility and fostering growth, it is poised to benefit startups, the capital market, and the broader Malaysian economy, aligning with the nation’s aspirations for innovation and technological advancement.

Get Ready for Google’s Pixel Party: New Devices Unveiled on October 4th!

Reading Time: 2 minutes read

Guess what, folks? Google’s got some exciting news to share! They’ve sent out invites for a cool event happening on October 4th. Brace yourselves for the latest and greatest additions to their “Pixel portfolio of devices.” The event’s happening in the buzzing city of New York at 10 a.m. ET. Yeah, you read that right!

While they’re keeping it hush-hush about the exact devices, Google dropped a hint on Threads that we might be in for a treat with the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. If history’s any guide, Google’s been treating us to new Pixel phones every autumn since 2016.

They posted on Threads, “Fall launches can be nail-biting, but Pixel keeps the cool vibe alive. The wait’s almost over. Gear up for Made By Google on October 4th.” Isn’t that just the right amount of teaser?

In the Threads post, they’ve even got a quirky video with an iPhone chatting up a Pixel phone. The Pixel’s showing off all its cool tricks, like unblurring old pics, handling unknown calls with AI, and even live translating messages. Oh, and that iPhone’s got its eyes on the prize – USB-C charging at the iPhone 15 event next month. Talk about keeping an eye on the competition!

Now, here’s the scoop on the Pixel 8 buzz. Rumour has it that these babies might rock an even better ultrawide camera, with some AI-powered magic thrown in for good measure. We could also see some fresh looks on the display and design front, though they’re likely to keep things chill in the changes department.

But wait, here’s the twist – the Pixel 8 Pro might come with a contactless thermometer feature. Yep, you heard it right. A phone that can check if you’re running a fever? That’s some next-level stuff!

And there’s more! Google might just surprise us with the Pixel Watch 2 – the sequel to their smartwatch. Rumour has it this one’s got better battery life and new health-tracking tricks up its sleeve.

Remember the Pixel 7 lineup? Yeah, it was a hit. The Pixel 7 Pro and the budget-friendly Pixel 7A even snagged spots on CNET’s list of best phones for 2023. But the big question now is, can the Pixel 8 step up its game and stand out in the crowd? Even CNET’s phone guru, Lisa Eadicicco, is keeping an eye out for some snazzy upgrades to set it apart.

Oh, and in case you missed it, Google’s announcement comes right after Apple locked in the date for their iPhone 15 reveal. Apple’s bringing the heat on September 12th at their HQ in Cupertino, California.

So, mark your calendars, gadget lovers – October 4th is the day to watch out for some Pixel-powered magic!

Apple’s iPhone 15 Event: All the Buzz on Upgrades, Zoom Lenses, and Action Buttons!

Reading Time: 3 minutes read

Hey folks, guess what? Apple just spilt the beans! They’ve locked in a special event for Tuesday, September 12 at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time. And guess where the action’s going down? Yep, at the Steve Jobs Theater, on the Apple Park campus in Cupertino, California.

Now, this time around, the event’s going to be pre-recorded. But here’s the kicker – Apple’s rolling out the red carpet for media peeps to swing by the campus and catch the show live. And, you won’t believe this, they might even get their hands on the new toys right after they’re unveiled. Talk about a sweet deal!

So, here’s the scoop – September spells iPhone time in Apple’s world. Brace yourselves for the lineup: the iPhone 15 at 6.1 inches, the beefier 6.7-inch iPhone 15 Plus, the sleek iPhone 15 Pro (also at 6.1 inches), and the granddaddy of them all, the 6.7-inch iPhone 15 Pro Max. Now, these bad boys are packing some heat – the Dynamic Island, a souped-up 5G chip from Qualcomm, and hold your horses, a switcheroo to a USB-C port instead of the Lightning one.

But wait, there’s more! The Pro models – the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max – are about to get an extra dose of special sauce. They’re getting a nip and tuck with slimmer bezels and a curvier frame. Did I mention that the Pro models are getting a titanium frame upgrade? Shiny stuff!

Hold onto your seats – Apple’s cooking up something wild. They’re throwing in their very first 3-nanometer chip, the A17, into the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. Rumor has it, this chip might come with an Action button instead of your regular mute switch. And that Action button? You can customize it, just like you would with the Apple Watch Ultra’s Action button.

Camera lovers, this one’s for you. The Pro models are getting a snazzy camera upgrade, and the cherry on top – the iPhone 15 Pro Max could score a periscope zoom lens. That’s a mouthful, but it translates to 5x or 6x optical zoom, up from 3x. However, keep in mind, that only the big boy Pro Max gets this treat due to hardware constraints.

Now, here comes the budget talk. Brace yourselves – with all these fancy upgrades and the swanky 3-nanometer chip, the iPhone 15 Pro might start at $1,099. And hold onto your wallets for the iPhone 15 Pro Max, which could hit the market starting at $1,199. But fear not, the regular iPhone 15 gang’s prices are keeping steady.

And that’s not all, folks! Alongside the iPhone buzz, we’re in for a treat with the Apple Watch Series 9 and a fresh take on the Apple Watch Ultra. Exciting times, right?

Mark your calendars – Apple’s got your back. They’re streaming the whole shebang live on their website, YouTube, and the trusty Apple TV app. So, get ready to geek out!
