Samsung Galaxy Ring: A Glimpse into the Future of Wearables

Reading Time: 3 minutes read

The Samsung Galaxy Ring unveiled at MWC 2024, gave an interesting glimpse into what may be in store for wearable tech. It was fitted with a burnished gold-colored band that raises quite an elegant appearance, more striking in natural light. However, all prototypes on the spot were not operational and only served as a view.

The prototype rings were very light, at 2.3 grams, to the point where they seemed a little plasticky. There were three colors on offer, Ceramic Black, Platinum Silver, and Gold, it was clear from looking that this was not the final product. Nor was it clear what kind of material would be used in it.

Samsung’s Chief Medical Officer, VP Dr. Hon Pak, wasn’t about to spill a great deal regarding the final product. Stuff like sizing mechanisms, sensor placements, and pricing weren’t yet available. Samsung is still in the stage of “refining,” and so much about the ring remains uncertain.

It focused on the advanced sleep-tracking features of the Ring. This will reportedly monitor resting heart rate, respiratory rate, night movement, and sleep latency—offering insights beyond usual smartwatches. The Vitality score then takes your sleep, activity, and heart rate data to assess your overall readiness.

Though the performance of the prototype remains speculative, according to Samsung, its features are to be integrated seamlessly, right detection, position of sensors, and maintenance of user comfort. It is in the implementation of these elements that the success of the final product will lie.

The Samsung Galaxy Ring is a real revolution in wearable technology. Though the prototypes look exciting, the actual details and functionalities of the final version are yet to be known. As development continues at Samsung, the tech community will keep a keen eye on updates.

What You Need to Know: Google Chrome Password Bug

Reading Time: < 1 minute read

An extreme issue was identified with the password manager in Google Chrome. For 18 hours, users were affected by a major outage where their credentials vanished. The disruption, which affected Windows users worldwide, made them quite frustrated. Chrome OS and macOS users were not affected by the problem.

Well, Google managed to trace the problem to a bug in the M127 version of Chrome for Windows, which was another of the latest stable releases. After realizing the bug, Google apologized and then made another fix. It said that at least 2% of the 25% user base affected by the change in question reported problems with accessing their passwords.

This was a temporary solution to enable Google Chrome with the correct command-line flag. Users report that, until then, they had to use –enable-features=SkipUndecryptablePasswords if they wanted to see their passwords again. Fortunately, Google fixed it pretty fast, and access was restored after a browser restart.

This strongly proved that there should be backup solutions for information of importance. Relying on a single password manager sometimes puts the person in a dilemma, as was evident in this outage. Users are advised to explore alternative methods of storing and securing passwords.

Although the fact that Google reacted so quickly means that there were no long-term issues, this does remind us of the importance of thinking about backup strategies for important data in order to avoid falling into such pitfalls in the future. Those still experiencing problems should reach out to Google Workspace Support for further assistance.

Innovative Flexible Tablet Display Patent Filed by Samsung

Reading Time: 2 minutes read

Samsung has filed a patent for flexible tablet display technology, which could revolutionize how one interacts with monitors and displays. This invention details a tablet featuring a flexible screen that would change shape depending on the user’s preference—for instance, from flat to curved.

The flexible display has mechanical parts and electrical parts. These allow the screen to bend and reshape. On a curved display, users have the chance to change between modules or different functionalities. It provides a more versatile interaction.

Samsung is gunning for a new benchmark of monitors targeting the tech enthusiast, gamer, and the day-to-day consumer. The technology is going to let users have a much better experience with productivity and entertainment. Their differentiation is what will give Samsung a unique selling point to stand out from the rest.

This, however, is still a patent. There’s a chance that Samsung may not turn it into a product. However, it goes on to show the commitment of Samsung to having advanced display solutions. If launched, this might affect how future tablets are designed and the features that can be put in.

In a nutshell, Samsung’s patent has given us the first glimpse of the future awaiting us regarding displays. Soon enough, flexible and adaptable screens are going to be part of our day-to-day lives. This tech will change the way we do things with our tablets and devices.

The PlayStation Portal streams games from the PS5 onto a handheld device. This device will require a stable WiFi internet connection to function. It has an 8″ LCD with 1080p resolution at 60fps. It also contains a DualSense wireless controller for gameplay that is familiar to gamers.

This will need at least a 15Mbps connection to make it sing. The Portal does have built-in speakers and includes a 3.5mm headphone jack, but there’s no Bluetooth option – it only uses PlayStation Link wireless instead.

You’re limited to using the Pulse Explore earbuds or Pulse Elite headsets with the Portal. This is convenient, yet limiting in some ways. For its price and what it does, some would have preferred just to use existing mobile devices for PS Remote Play.

Will Sony’s PlayStation Portal change the way you game, or is it another accessory?

This year, Google is rolling out four different models of the Pixel 9 series. It is rumored to have a Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and a Pixel 9 Pro Fold. This would prove to be a major launch compared with the previous ones. This parallels Apple’s strategy of fielding a few variations of its iPhones.

Pixel 9 Series Design and Features

It will be an entirely new land in design and features for the Pixel 9 series. Google has announced that the Pixel 9 Pro Fold is going to be a foldable phone. In this way, this is going to be Google’s first entry into the foldable phone market. The new models bring advanced specifications and features to blend with various user requirements.

The Pixel 9 release event is scheduled for August 13, 2024. The pre-ordering and shipping dates are likely to be on the same day, or a little afterward. Social Media Platforms in Malaysia Must Apply for Licenses

Reading Time: 2 minutes read

Any social media with more than eight million users in Malaysia will have to get a license from August 1. The enforcement will take effect on January 1, 2025. Any failure to comply with this directive may lead to legal action against the defaulters and possible blacking out. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said that stringent enforcement would be carried out to avoid any claims of political motives.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi

It is, in essence, a regulation against online fraud, scams, cyberbullying, and adult content. Zahid emphasized the part that user responsibility plays. Compliance rates vary, from a high of 88% put up by Instagram to a low of 25% offered by X. The low compliance rates forced this decision.

Impact on Malaysian Businesses Using Social Media

social media

Many Malaysian businesses rely on social media for marketing. Non-compliance could seriously affect those businesses. The bans would encourage businesses to venture into other marketing platforms. Local media could stand to gain in case any platforms face a ban.

Opportunities for Local Media Platforms

It could result in ad money raining down on local newspapers, websites, radio, and TV. Social media has badly disrupted local media earnings. Local media companies lose some RM2 billion every year. The new rules may finally rebalance the landscape of media.

The compliance rates by social media platforms vary. Instagram and Facebook have higher compliance rates; however, the level of fraud is still very high. The MCMC received almost 100,000 complaints in 2024 alone. All these factors call for the new requirements in terms of licensing.

Malaysians need to be prepared for these changes. Businesses and users need to be informed. This is a radical turn of events for Malaysia’s social media approach. Compliance will then be imperative for the platforms and their users.
