X to Close San Francisco Office and Relocate Employees

X is closing its longtime San Francisco office soon, CEO Linda Yaccarino told staff in an email, per The New York Times. Staff will relocate to other Bay Area offices.

Elon Musk previously threatened to move X to Austin, Texas. The note by Yaccarino did not mention Texas. The closure will come in the next few weeks. The staff shall continue to work out of Palo Alto and San Jose locations.

X has had something of a bumpy relationship with San Francisco. Musk banned remote work after acquiring the business in 2022. He mandated staff return to its San Francisco office, a decision that many inside the company little appreciated.

Moreover, Musk had issues with the city’s building regulations. He put up a giant flashing X on the building. There were also reports of over-office space being converted into sleeping quarters. X’s landlord sued the company for unpaid rent earlier this year. The lawsuit was later dismissed.

Despite this, Musk said earlier that he would not leave San Francisco. He said so in a tweet. Musk made a post about how companies have been leaving San Francisco. He said X wasn’t going anywhere.

But signals were sent out. The landlord tried to sublease the 800,000-square-foot headquarters of X. The San Francisco Chronicle reported this in July. The news about the relocation comes amid those earlier signals.

X did not immediately return requests seeking comments. The company is rolling up its sleeves in anticipation of major changes. Workers will have to adjust to a different work environment—the move ushers in a new era for X in the Bay Area.

Apple Watch SE 2024 Upgrade with New Plastic Design

Apple is readying an updated model of the Apple Watch SE. It might signal a change to “rigid plastic” in its design. A launch may come with the release of the iPhone 16 series. Further democratization of the watch, making it more affordable and desirable, is likely with the upcoming move. In terms of the design, several possibilities for changing materials to plastic would open up. In so many ways, that veers from the rather muted colors of current models.

The Watch SE has formed the affordable end of Apple’s offerings since its introduction in 2020, which featured the same screen as that year’s Series 6. More to the point, though, it lacked features such as an Always-On Display and ECG support. The 2022 model upgraded the processor and switched to a nylon composite back. Still missing out were many of the latest health features.

According to Gurman, the next Watch SE might come with a new plastic body. It would probably reduce production costs for Apple, and then it would be able to sell a greater number of colors. Those colors could be more energetic to young users who love vivid device designs.

It may also maintain the price at its current level of $249 ~RM1,097. Apple might add features such as ECG support or always-on display. Or maybe it could just go with what’s there and drop the price. Who knows? That is just a rumor.

As always, it’s best to take things with a grain of salt until the official announcements are made. This refresh of the Apple Watch SE really could be a game-changer.

RingConn Gen 2 Sets New Kickstarter Record

Reading Time: 3 minutes read

The smart ring market is on fire. One such smart ring, RingConn Gen 2, blew out Kickstarter funding records. This new model has pulled in more than $1.6 million since its launch at the beginning of this month. More impressively, it broke the $1 million mark in a lesser period than any previous smart ring campaign, which goes to show just how much interest consumers have in this product and the amount of trust they have in RingConn.

Some of the significant updates in this second-generation model include sleeker, more refined designs compared to its predecessor. It further added up to 12 days of extended battery life from up to a maximum of seven days on the previous generation to better battery life, now letting people use their devices for a longer time without worrying about frequent charging.

One of the key updates is the inclusion of sleep apnea tracking. According to reports, the new device detects sleep apnea with 90% accuracy. This feature is therefore very vital for those who care about the quality of their sleep and related health issues. Sleep tracking has been one of the main functions brought about by smart rings, and this new ability adds great value.

RingConn

The pricing for this RingConn Gen 2 is competitive. Full retail is $299, but Kickstarter backers can get their hands on one for $209. Compared to other smart rings, including Samsung’s Galaxy Ring, the selling price is $399, so this is quite a saving. Budget customers are going to go hard on this Gen 2 model because of its affordability.

RingConn is quite established in the smart ring market. Their previous product, the RingConn Smart Ring, did not do too shabbily either, save for very minor issues. The device received some good reviews—most of them, in fact—for pretty accurate data tracking at a reasonable price. The Gen 2 upgrades only add to such a strong base, ultimately ensuring a much richer user experience.

However, testing will still be instrumental in confirming the performance of the Gen 2. With impressive features and the very strong performance of its campaign, it could turn out to be one of the top contenders. It might challenge even the high-end options, such as the Galaxy Ring. That alone makes the RingConn Gen 2 quite an attractive value proposition for many consumers.

Though one never knows what’s in store with a Kickstarter campaign, it gives credibility based on RingConn’s history. It has had the prowess to deliver according to its promises. On that basis, the Gen 2 smart ring stands a good chance of at least meeting, if not exceeding, expectations. The world will keenly watch how it turns out once it finally hits the market.

RingConn

All in all, the RingConn Gen 2 will make a huge statement in the smart ring market. The features—some of which come with an extended battery life at an unbeatable price—make it head and shoulders above competing devices. At this price point, everything this smart ring seems to have will translate it to be the best budget smart ring in 2024. Of course, it is not perfect, and we will have to review this device to see how it compares to its peers.

OpenAI’s Approach to Text Watermarking and Its Challenges

Reading Time: 2 minutes read

It had been working on a text watermarking technique to identify essays generated using ChatGPT. Recently, a report came out saying that OpenAI hadn’t released this tool. OpenAI is said to have disclosed that the watermarking technique, while very accurate in some cases, was brittle to some sorts of tampering, including translation and rewording by other models, and text changes.

text watermarking

The company contemplates various methods for ascertaining the originality of the text. Among them are watermarking, studying classifiers, and metadata. As efficient as watermarking could prove to be, it might be associated with some drawbacks, like further stigmatizing the use of AI by non-native English speakers. These considerations are one important reason for keeping the tool under wraps.

text watermarking

Their selection of prioritizing authentication tools for audio-visual content before text watermarking illustrates the challenges and broad implications that text provenance can entail. The company envisions walking a fine line between effectiveness and ethics.

The release of the watermarking tool is still very indefinite as OpenAI continues to conduct its research. It assesses the risks and benefits associated with the different methods. For the present, the text watermarking tool remains in the working stage.

OpenAI is very careful when it comes to watermarking because of the many challenges involved. It seeks to find a resolution that supports both accuracy and ethical concerns.
