Now, Android has AI-generated digital passes in Google Wallet. The new option, announced at Google I/O, replaces the old “Photo” feature where users could make passes with just a simple barcode or QR code.

Google Wallet

Using this “Everything Else” option, users can turn a wide variety of passes into their digital formats in haste. It supports business cards, IDs, and loyalty cards—no need to hunt through apps or PDFs in search.

To do so, a user has to select “Everything Else” in Google Wallet and grant permission for AI processing. The AI from Google will do the sorting of pass information accordingly, it may be a health pass or driver’s license.

Upload a photo of the pass, one can examine it for errors and make changes accordingly. In this way, one could digitize the important documents.

This feature is currently only available in the U.S. Google, of course, is working to extend it to many more devices. People have it, and soon, it will be extended to other Android devices.

With this feature continuing to roll out, more people will begin using digital passes created by AI. This makes it much easier for people to keep up with all their documents and make every day a lot easier to go about.

Microsoft Paint 3D Shutdown: Integrates Latest Features

Reading Time: < 1 minute read

A banner in the app has informed users that Microsoft Paint 3D will be retired on 4 November 2024. This is the end of its seven-year life. Paint 3D was rolled out as the Microsoft Paint modern equivalent with a main focus on 3D modeling.

Even with new advanced features, such as layers and transparency effects, Paint 3D was criticized. People still wanted to use the classic Microsoft Paint enough that Microsoft decided to continue running both versions. In 2023, Microsoft updated Paint to include some of the key features of Paint 3D, including layers and auto background removal.

Microsoft Paint 3D

Besides that, Paint has incorporated an AI-driven feature called Cocreator for Microsoft Copilot users. It puts Paint at the same level as Paint 3D. It is henceforth justified to kill Paint 3D since all its features are on Paint.

Microsoft Paint remains the very basic tool it always has been under Windows. Certainly, it is nowhere near something like GIMP, but it does pretty much everything most people want. Thus, this move to consolidate features within Paint and retire Paint 3D makes sense.

Apple Intelligence, a new AI platform from Apple, will debut later this year. According to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, users will not be paying anything for these AI features up until at least 2027. That is surprising because most people expected this advanced set of tools to include a price tag attached by Apple.

Free Apple Intelligence

Initial speculations had termed that this would cost somewhere around $10 to $20, or even be included in the Apple One bundle. However, an update from Gurman stated that Apple has decided to offer all of these features for free. Of course, higher-end features could be added down the line, but at its base, this toolkit will come for free.

Free Apple Intelligence will come with a spate of tools, including AI writing assistants, image generation, and advanced Siri capabilities. According to trials carried out by Mashable, early results are positive for features like improved Writing Tools and AI search for Photos.

Free Apple Intelligence would aid Apple in rapidly building up a huge user base to effectively compete in the AI market. This move would be an aid to Apple in catching up with its rivals, who have established themselves well inside the AI sector already.

This past week, Google released the new 4th-Gen Nest Learning Thermostat. This smart thermostat costs $280 with an all-glass display that is slim in design with muted bezels and a large screen, modern and premium in look.

Nest Learning Thermostat

Moreover, the 4th-Gen Nest Learning Thermostat is focused on energy efficiency. It does support up to six Google Nest Temperature Sensors. Information of interest is displayed through its farsight display as distance changes. Moreover, it gives subtle warnings regarding the HVAC systems, which prevents costly repairs.

Nest Learning Thermostat

In addition to that new thermostat, Google is redesigning its controls in the Google Home app. More specifically, this update is found on the Google Home Public Preview version 3.20.1.8. However, the rollout is gradual, and not all users have received it yet.

The refreshed interface moves the Nest app and Energy Dashboard icons to someplace below the primary controls, while keeping the setting cog and overflow menu along the top. It is expected that this reshuffle will increase efficiency without hurting accessibility.

Nest Learning Thermostat

Probably most visible, the ability to change temperature is now directly in the Favorites menu, before, that required opening the full control panel. Now, the ‘+’ and ‘-‘ buttons are available for quick changes in the Favorites menu.

Details on the rest of the UI changes should come around August 20, when the thermostat goes up for sale.

CrowdStrike Humble Acceptance of ‘Most Epic Fail’ Award

Reading Time: 2 minutes read

CrowdStrike took a lot of flak when a software update caused a global IT meltdown a few weeks ago. But the company’s president, Michael Sentonas, wasn’t afraid of a little controversy – he swung by the Pwnie Awards to accept the “Most Epic Fail” award in person. It happened just after the Black Hat conference, where CrowdStrike had one of the largest booths at the show, touting free T-shirts and action figures.

What became apparent in the acceptance speech was the mixed reaction from the audience and most people. Although it was an award for a massive screw-up, Sentonas was at the moment humbly and graciously addressing what had gone wrong at the company and why taking responsibility for mistakes was the right thing to do.

Presented with a ridiculously oversized trophy, the award proved to be quite tongue-in-cheek, a gesture that highlighted the serious satirization of the occasion. Sentonas conceded that this is not an award that one should want to win. He did use his speech though to double down on his commitment to what the company was doing and the accountability it enforces.

CrowdStrike

Sentonas underlined in his speech that taking ownership of mistakes was crucial in development. He made the audience privy to the fact that CrowdStrike would come out of the experience wiser and ensure that something like this never happens to their users again. The Pwnie will stand front and center at CrowdStrike HQ to remind the company of its duty to protect its users.

In accepting the award, CrowdStrike looks to further demonstrate its commitment to transparency and betterment. The incident is a lesson for CrowdStrike to remain focused on protecting the users while learning from mistakes.
