Tesla Recalls Model X SUVs for Roof Trim Issue: All You Need to Know

Reading Time: 2 minutes read

Tesla is recalling 9,136 Model X SUVs due to a roof trim problem. This recall applies only to vehicles from model year 2016. The problem lies with the appliques, which could come off the roof over time. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration via Reuters, this makes an accident more likely.

Model X SUVs

The issue is the roof trim adhesion. The front and spine appliques are attached by urethane. Without proper primer, the adhesion could weaken, causing it to separate. That is something that would have to be taken to a service center to have it repaired properly.

Affected owners will have to visit a Tesla service center for repair. After that, the service will perform an adhesion test and refasten trim pieces to ensure the vehicle remains safe to drive at no cost to the owner.

Model X SUVs

This recall is important in that it is the second recall for this issue. The first occurred back in 2020 but did not repair the problem fully. Tesla received about 170 reports on this but no reports of any crashes or injuries.

The move by Tesla to recall Model X SUVs has brought to the fore, quality control issues that remain prevalent and which the company is struggling to get rid of once and for all this time.

Microsoft Windows Recall to Launch with Improved Security

Reading Time: 2 minutes read

Microsoft has revived its Windows Recall feature, which first came about in May. Microsoft held off on the feature due to security concerns. The company now announced that Recall will be available to Windows Insiders starting in October.

Windows Recall feature

Windows Recall feature is designed to store snapshots of activities on your PC. It acts like a “photographic memory” product, emails, documents, and chats can all be visited again. This will, therefore, prove very helpful, especially to people who work on their PCs for long hours.

The problem was that it also introduced a big privacy issue, security researchers said access to plain text data could be gained if malware or hackers gain control of your PC. Microsoft’s part in this mess was to simply ignore the encryption in the first place, and widespread criticism ensued.

Windows Recall feature

As a reaction to this, Microsoft has now added tighter security. The feature is now opt-in and will require Windows Hello for access. Secondly, Recall will use “just in time” decryption to secure users’ data.

This will mandate CoPilot+ PCs with compatible chips running from Qualcomm, while Intel most probably is expected on this list. Microsoft plans to release more details about it in October through the Windows 11 Insider Program.

Gemini Nano Improves Transcription Limits with New Multimodal AI

Reading Time: 2 minutes read

Google has sunk a lot of money into AI, and its success has been spotty. But the new Pixel Screenshots app is an example of when it works. It intelligently analyzes and organizes your screenshots. You’ll be able to find them later over simple conversational search cues, too. That’s a feature that goes to show Google is doing something right in applying AI.

Not all AI features, however, have proved successful. For instance, Gemini summaries in Google Recorder have been botched. On-device Gemini Nano promises real-time transcription summaries, but quite frequently, it doesn’t work and gives errors like “Transcript is too short” or “Transcript is too long”.

These are particularly notable problems with longer recordings. Summaries are most useful on the lengthier content, but these current limitations hinder this. At least in the case of setbacks like these, improvements are what the new Pixel 9 series is for, including a new Gemini Nano with multimodality that finally allows for longer transcripts.

Gemini Nano

Now, it can hold recordings up to 41 minutes long, which makes a big difference. It still sometimes fails at recordings over an hour. As of now, Gemini Nano in multimodality is only available on the Pixel 9 series and there has been no indication it will extend to older Pixel models.

While developments in AI from Google are admirable, such as Pixel Screenshots, the boundaries for Gemini Nano remain there. In the case of older models of Pixels, users may not get any advantages from fresh improvements.
