If you keep running out of space on your Android phone, it can be annoying. You might have to keep deleting old photos, videos, and unused apps. But soon, Android users may not have to uninstall apps to free up space. This could be good news for people who have cheaper phones with less storage.

Infrequently used apps will be partly removed to save space, but the app icon won’t be deleted and your data will remain. If you tap on the app again, it will quickly redownload and you can continue where you left off. Archived apps will have a cloud icon indicating that you need to reinstall them. You don’t need to opt in unless you’re running out of storage. If you try to install a new app while low on storage, you’ll be prompted to turn on the auto archive. You can change your preferences in settings if you change your mind later.

Only those who use Android App Bundle can add this feature to their apps. If you allow your app to be archived, users are less likely to see it in uninstall suggestions. Google thinks auto archive can help users and developers by freeing up device storage space and reducing app uninstallation.
