The PS5 Pro is yet to be priced locally and there is already talk of the PlayStation 6. An article provides information on meetings between Sony and chip designers. At this meeting, Sony again gives preference to AMD like in the case of the current generation.
According to Reuters, the decision was made in 2022 and the two final candidates, to put it that way, of the bidding process were AMD and Intel. The latter was not chosen in the end because of the โdisagreement between Apple and Intel on a specific level of profit share Intel was to realize from each chipโ. Meanwhile, it was Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. that would go about the actual process of designing the chips that the above brands intend to embrace in their chips.
Although such dealings otherwise would not be of much concern to any ordinary game enthusiast, one advantage of having AMD as the provider of the chips for the PlayStation 6 is that this is backward compatible. Since the same company made the chip for two generations of the console, the possibility of backward compatibility on the next generation of the console would be higher than having Intel as the chip designer for Sony’s next generation console.
Not to say that it would not have happened if the blue silicon brand were to be the one winning the contract, it is just that more resources would be channeled to ensure that it happens were it to happen. However, at any rate, and with console generation expected to last up to the year 2027, it would take ages before the PlayStation 6 comes out officially.
