Beware of Malicious ChatGPT Imposters, Warn Meta Security Analysts

Reading Time: < 1 minute read

The security team at Meta is warning users about fake ChatGPT malware that can hack user accounts and take over business pages. Malware operators and spammers are creating fake versions of AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Bing, and Bard, in order to trick users into trying them. Meta security analysts have found around 10 forms of malware posing as AI chatbot-related tools since March. Some of these fake chatbots are available as web browser extensions and toolbars and are even being sold through unnamed official web stores. The Washington Post reported last month about how these fake ChatGPT scams have been using Facebook ads to spread.

Some fake ChatGPT malware has AI built in to appear more convincing. Meta security analysts have identified around 10 forms of this malware posing as AI chatbot-related tools since March. Over 1,000 unique links to the malware have been blocked by Meta. The company has also explained how scammers gain access to accounts by hijacking logged-in sessions and maintaining access. This method is similar to the one used in the attack that brought down Linus Tech Tips.

Meta is providing a new support flow for businesses that have been hacked or shut down on Facebook. Typically, business pages are hacked because individual users with access to them get targeted by malware. Meta is deploying new Meta work accounts that support existing, more secure, single sign-on credential services from organizations. The hope is that it’ll be more difficult for malware like fake ChatGPT to attack once businesses migrate to the new Meta work accounts.

Revolutionary Update: AMD Processors Now Compatible with Framework Laptop

Reading Time: 2 minutes read

Framework has announced a new version of its 13-inch laptop for 2023. This time, they are offering both Intel and AMD processor options. Last year’s model had only an Intel processor, which was not as good as the rest of the device. The Framework Laptop is known for being repairable and upgradable, but the battery life was not great. Now, with the AMD option, it might be a better choice for daily use.

The AMD processor might help improve the Framework Laptop’s battery life. Framework hasn’t shared battery life estimates for the AMD option yet. It’s best to wait for reviews before deciding between the Intel and AMD models. The entry-level model of the AMD option has a Ryzen 5 7640U processor. This processor has six cores with a base frequency of 3.5GHz and a max turbo of 4.9GHz. It also comes with AMD’s integrated Radeon 760M graphics.

The entry-level AMD model has a Ryzen 5 7640U processor with six cores, a base frequency of 3.5GHz, and a max turbo of 4.9GHz. It also has AMD’s integrated Radeon 760M graphics with eight compute units. The higher-spec AMD model has a Ryzen 7 7840U processor with eight cores, a base frequency of 3.3GHz, and a max turbo of 5.1GHz. It comes with AMD’s integrated Radeon 780M graphics with 12 compute units. Framework designed the laptop’s cooling system to handle a continuous load at 28W for these chips.

The rear two USB-C expansion ports on the AMD models support USB 4 with external GPU support. The other two USB-C ports support USB 3.2, and the front left port has DisplayPort Alt Mode for external display connection. The AMD laptop uses the same chassis as the Intel version, and you can upgrade your Intel version by buying an AMD mainboard (and DDR5 RAM and AMD-compatible Wi-Fi card). Both Intel and AMD mainboards are available for pre-order with a refundable $100 deposit.

Framework has made some “refinements” to the user experience. They’ve released a higher-capacity battery that’s compatible with existing laptops. New kits, such as a Display Kit with a matte top layer and a more stable Hinge Kit, are available in the Framework Marketplace and come standard on the new laptop. The 80dB Speaker Kit is integrated into the Intel model for increased loudness, while the audio circuitry is tuned for loudness and fidelity in the AMD model. These upgrades are welcome since the 2022 Framework’s audio was weak.

Both the Intel and AMD models are available for preorder. The first Intel shipments are coming in May, and AMD in Q3. Prices start at $849 for DIY kits and $1,049 for prebuilt. A refundable $100 deposit is due at the time of preorder. The company will expand shipments to Spain, Belgium, Italy, and Taiwan this summer.

Controversial: ChatGPT Banned in French University for Fraud and Plagiarism Allegations

Reading Time: < 1 minute read

A French university has stopped students from using ChatGPT, a language model created by OpenAI, due to fears of fraud and plagiarism. The university believes that students may use ChatGPT to create work that is not their own. This ban means that students cannot use ChatGPT for any academic purposes. This highlights the concern over the use of artificial intelligence tools for unethical purposes.

Other universities have also banned AI tools like essay writing software because of concerns about fraud and plagiarism. Using AI tools in education is complicated because they can make academic work easier but also raise ethical issues. It’s important for universities to think about how to prevent students from using AI tools to cheat and what role AI should play in education. There are questions about what counts as plagiarism in a world where AI tools can generate content.

The ban on ChatGPT shows that people are worried about AI tools being used unethically in education.

Although AI in education has benefits, universities must think about how to use it responsibly.

Educational institutions should consider the ethical and practical implications of AI tools and ensure they are used appropriately.

Apple and Google have teamed up to address the misuse of location-tracking devices. The tech giants have submitted a proposal to make devices like AirTags compatible with unauthorized tracking detection and alerts on both iOS and Android platforms. This first-of-its-kind specification aims to combat stalking and unwanted tracking. Other manufacturers like Samsung, Tile, Chipolo, Eufy, and Pebblebee have also supported this proposal.

Bluetooth trackers have many benefits but also come with the risk of unwanted tracking. Google is committed to protecting its users and will collaborate with the industry to combat misuse. Apple and Google have submitted a proposal to the Internet Engineering Task Force to create a specification for Bluetooth location-tracking devices. The proposal is open for interested parties to review for the next three months. Apple and Google will release a production implementation of the specification by the end of the year supported on future versions of iOS and Android.

Apple launched AirTag to help users find their important items and built proactive features to discourage unwanted tracking. Samsung Bans Use of AI Tools, Including ChatGPT, for Employee Security Concerns

Reading Time: 2 minutes read

Samsung has banned the use of generative AI tools like ChatGPT on its internal networks and devices. This is because uploading sensitive information to these platforms could pose a security risk. The ban is temporary and aimed at creating a secure environment to safely use generative AI tools. OpenAI’s chatbot, ChatGPT, is the biggest risk factor as people use it for serious work, including inputting sensitive information. This could potentially give OpenAI access to that information.

The privacy risks when using ChatGPT depend on how a user accesses the service. If a company uses ChatGPT’s API, conversations with the chatbot are not visible to OpenAI’s support team and are not used to train the company’s models. However, if the text is inputted into the general web interface using its default settings, the conversations can be reviewed by OpenAI to improve its systems and ensure compliance with its policies and safety requirements. OpenAI advises users not to share sensitive information and notes that conversations may be used to train future versions of ChatGPT. OpenAI has recently introduced an “incognito mode” feature that does not save chat histories and prevents them from being used for training.

Samsung is concerned about employees using generative AI tools like ChatGPT and not realizing the security risks involved. The company has issued an internal memo that restricts the use of generative AI tools on its internal networks and company-owned devices. Samsung is currently reviewing security measures to create a safe environment for using generative AI tools to enhance productivity and efficiency. The company is also requesting that employees not upload sensitive business information via their personal devices.

Samsung warned employees to adhere to security guidelines and avoid using generative AI tools like ChatGPT, citing security concerns. The company discovered that some staff had leaked internal source code by uploading it to ChatGPT. The ban covers the use of generative AI on company-owned devices and networks. Samsung is currently reviewing security measures to create a secure environment for safely using generative AI. Violating the security guideline may result in disciplinary action, including termination of employment.

Many companies and institutions have placed limits on the use of generative AI tools, and Samsung has now joined them due to security concerns. Banks and schools have restricted or banned such tools due to compliance, data protection, child safety, cheating, and misinformation fears. Samsung is reportedly working on developing in-house AI solutions for its employees to use eventually. The company plans to create tools for translation, document summarization, and software development. Generative AI restrictions do not apply to devices sold to consumers like laptops or phones.
