Cracking Down: YouTube Enforces New Rules on VPN Premium Subscribers

Reading Time: 2 minutes read

Have you ever tried any hacks online to get a cheaper streaming subscription? For instance, using a VPN to get a cheaper YouTube Premium subscription? If yes, then sadly that’s coming to an end now. YouTube has officially confirmed to TechCrunch that it’s working on a way to block users using VPN to get cheaper YouTube subscriptions.

In case you are not aware, if you use a premium VPN service you can set it to a country such as India and then you can get cheaper Netflix, Amazon and YouTube Premium subscriptions. For instance, in Malaysia YouTube subscription is around MYR18 which means if you set your location to India, you can get the YouTube Premium somewhere around MYR8 approximately. Did you see how much you can save with this simple hack?

According to YouTube, with this new feature the moment it detects a user is lying about their location, the app will automatically prompt the user to update their billing information. In this case, the moment the billing information shows another country, the YouTube Premium subscription will be declined.

Here’s the information shared by the YouTube spokesperson:

To provide the most accurate plans and offers available, we have systems in place to determine the country of our users. In instances where the signup country does not match where the user is accessing YouTube, we’re asking members to update their billing information to their current country of residence.

In conclusion, if you have been trying to use your VPN to get a YouTube Premium subscription, sooner that would not work for you. Stay tuned for more interesting tech updates from us.

Discover the Revolutionary Tesla Cybertruck Exhibition in Penang

Reading Time: 3 minutes read

It’s been making waves in Malaysia, but the Tesla Cybertruck isn’t going to stop there. It will continue to create waves beyond the Klang Valley, as Tesla Malaysia has announced that the futuristic electric pickup truck is going to be showcased at Gurney Plaza in Penang. Thereafter, running from now until June 30, one can visit and view the Cybertruck daily from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM without an appointment. It also offers timeslots for visitors to get a closer look at the interior of this innovative EV.

Tesla Cybertruck

Next, it heads over to Queensbay Mall for the second stop of its showcase across the northern state of Penang. This next stop is open for public viewing from July 2-14, allowing more enthusiasts and curious onlookers the opportunity to get up close with the Cybertruck.

After all that fanfare, it won’t be for sale in Malaysia. Mostly because the vehicle is in an LHD form factor – not for Malaysian roads, at least not without special permits. This unit that’s on preview duty was brought in directly from Tesla’s Gigafactory in Texas, and it serves as a tech demonstrator to support Tesla’s other Malaysian offerings, namely Model 3 and Model Y.

While all eyes are currently on Penang, Tesla Malaysia has not disclosed its next destination for the Cybertruck after the Penang roadshow. Enthusiasts are highly encouraged to keep a lookout for more updates regarding the Cybertruck’s journey across Malaysia.

Tesla Cybertruck Quick Specs

There are three types of Tesla Cybertruck, each catering to different performance needs and preferences. The Base Model (RWD), which will be available in 2025, accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 6.7 seconds, has a top speed of 180 km/h, a range of 402 km, and a towing capacity of 3,402 kg.

The Mid-Spec Model (AWD) features a dual motor all-wheel drive, accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 4.3 seconds, maintains a top speed of 180 km/h, offers a range of 547 km, and boasts a towing capacity of 4,990 kg.

The high-performance Cyberbeast (AWD) variant is equipped with a tri-motor all-wheel drive, achieving 0-100 km/h in 2.7 seconds (with rollout subtracted), has a top speed of 209 km/h, a range of 515 km, and a towing capacity higher than the mid-spec AWD model.

Enhanced Media Quality on WhatsApp: What’s Changing?

0
Reading Time: 2 minutes read

In what could be a significant development for its users, WhatsApp is rolling out a new feature that could greatly improve the quality of shared media. While the platform did offer last year the functionality for sharing photos and later on videos in high definition, the selection was still required to be made by the user with every upload. This is what irritated many who prefer the clarity and details that HD has to offer in comparison with standard definition.

Now, following reports highlighted by Android Police, it is testing a feature for setting HD quality as default for every kind of media upload in the latest beta version. This update would smoothen it by making sure that one does not have to memorize to toggle HD mode every time one sends a photo or video.

How It Works

This new feature can be found under the “Storage and data” option in WhatsApp’s “Settings” menu. One can get that option to change to either SD or HD under “Media upload quality.” When the user selects HD, photos and videos transmitted over WhatsApp will have high-definition clarity and more finely detailed descriptions, increasing the clarity of the content.

While it might sound very attractive to many, blurring out the prospect of a default HD quality, WhatsApp is quite clear when it comes to the potential drawbacks. In cases where a user chooses to upload in HD, the file size could increase, thereby slowing down the upload speed. Additionally, the data used in sending HD Media through mobile networks may increase manifold as compared to their SD uploads. WhatsApp recognizes that HD photos and videos can be up to six times bigger than the SD alternative and bring with them an increased data cost for mobile users whose plans do not include unlimited data.

Worth noting is that this feature applies only to media uploads and does not extend to status updates within the app. Right now, being in beta means the HD default option is still being tested by a small slice of users. No word on a full rollout to all WhatsApp users, but its appearance in beta suggests a full release isn’t too far off.

Apple Shifts Focus to Affordable Vision Pro Headset and Pauses Development of Second-Generation Model

Reading Time: 2 minutes read

Apple is reportedly shifting gears in the augmented reality and virtual reality market, focusing development on a cheaper model of its Vision Pro headset. This shift comes as the tech giant seeks to capture a wider audience with a competitively priced alternative against its $3,500 Vision Pro.

According to a report by The Information, Apple is currently working on a more affordable model of the Vision Pro headset that could reach markets some time in late 2025. From there, Apple’s chances of competing against what Meta and others have to offer through their Quest series devices will be much stronger. A projected price tag for this new device could hit $1,500—close to the price of a high-end iPhone.

International Expansion and Software Updates

This development comes off the back of Apple announcing its first international expansion for the Vision Pro—slated to land in eight new countries in the near future—as well as giving a sneak peek into what’s coming in visionOS 2, its bid to revamp the user experience of all AR/VR devices.

While Apple seems quite optimistic about the more affordable Vision Pro, the development process is not all plain sailing. The company is earlier reported to be struggling to bring down the cost of the device without sacrificing a whole lot at the altars of user experience. Weight reduction is one of the critical areas of focus since it makes the headset lighter. That was among the very significant complaints with the original Vision Pro.

Shelving the Second-Generation Vision ProSEND

Apple had intended to sell a number of models under the Vision brand, including at least one second-generation, high-end model called the Vision Pro. According to The Information, though, Apple has put everything on hold and is now focusing resources and manpower on the cheaper device. Sources have said that second-gen Vision Pro staffing has slowly reduced in the last year, as the company shifted focus on to the cheaper device.

Whereas the work on that second-generation Vision Pro has been paused, The Information believes it might be revisited in the future. But for now, one thing is obvious: Apple’s massive focus lies in the Vision Pro—getting a more Reachable, Affordable, and Attainable headset out in the market and ensuring broad positioning within the fast-growing augmented reality/virtual reality space.

The decision by Apple to bring out a more affordable Vision Pro headset is, therefore, one of the strategic decisions it has ever made, as it struggles to increase its consumer base and meet market demands. This change in strategy would, therefore clearly place Apple in a great position against competitors and more so, a better-equipped stance at that, on matters AR/VR, even though the engineering challenge this presents might be difficult to surmount.
