Meta Threatens to Block News on Facebook in Australia

Reading Time: 2 minutes read

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, issues a warning—threating to block news content on its platform—to the Australian government over proposed regulations that would make tech giants compensate news organizations for their content.

Meta Response to Australia Government Regulations

The company considers these regulations to be unfair, stating that they will hurt the Australian media environment since it is inclined to believe news content constitutes a small portion on Facebook. Furthermore, they point out the fact they already contribute to the Australian media industry via different initiatives.

Meta Facebook

The standoff crystallizes a longstanding anger from large tech firms and governments over the issue of control of material on their platforms. By threatening to block news on Facebook in Australia, Meta has sounded the alarm regarding how news will be disseminated online in the future. It also underlining the close and convoluted relationship that tech companies, governments, and media are in.

The Australian government does not, however, retreat. They declare that tech giants, mainly Meta, have enjoyed incredible benefits from news content. Therefore, it would be only equitable to properly compensate news companies for their efforts. Additionally, these kinds of regulations had been put into exercise in other nations.

The government is forging ahead with its intended regulations. It says news organizations should get fair payment for their content. Meta continues to stick by its point of view. It still claims that the regulations are unworkable and could have harmful implications for the Australian media environment.

This only looks set to continue changing over the next few months. Still unanswered is the question of whether Meta will actually close news off from Facebook in Australia. How this standoff end will have major implications for the future of online news distribution and relationships between technology companies and governments.

Juno 2.0 Elevates YouTube to New Heights on Apple Vision Pro

Reading Time: 2 minutes read

Apple’s $3,500 headset—the Vision Pro—does not have an official app for YouTube. Although Google has plans to release an app, users are currently forced to view YouTube using Safari. Thankfully, a third-party app called Juno 2.0 at least manages to offer a far better experience when it comes to YouTube viewing.

Juno 2.0

Some of the latest features in Juno 2.0 include a new reimagined tab bar that provides an easier way to access and move faster across menus. More significantly, immersive 180º and 360º videos from YouTube now work with Vision Pro. Juno also makes use of Apple’s Metal engine to perform AI upscaling of 4K videos up to sharp 6K resolution.

But beyond these highlights, Juno 2.0 runs smoother, features better window resizing, and remembers user preferences between videos. It even lets users use Siri to control playback speed or skip to particular video points.

While Google hasn’t been much of a fan of third-party YouTube apps, Juno still works as the best way to watch YouTube on the Apple Vision Pro. It costs only $4.99 as a one-time purchase on the Vision Pro App Store.
