Microsoft Notepad Spellcheck: New Feature Enhances Windows 11

Reading Time: < 1 minute read

For the first time, Microsoft word processor Notepad gets spell-check for words—more than 40 years since its launch in 1983. Ronald Reagan was the president, and Ghostbusters was merely a script.

A new Spell-checker has made its way to Notepad on Windows 11, and it works as it does in Word or Edge. It detects misspelled words by underlining them in red. If there is a right-click made on the misspelled word, a suggested correction list pops up, much akin to other Microsoft apps. It also comes with auto-correct capabilities that fix mistakes right as one is typing.

Most interestingly, through the settings menu of Notepad, users can switch off the spellcheck for specific file types. That means formats like .md or .rt won’t have spellcheck turned on over them. Spelling check is also off by default in coding-related file types, such as log files. The process of replacing a spelling mistake takes an additional click in Notepad compared to Word, which had its spellchecker as way back as 1985.

Notepad is getting beefed up because Microsoft’s planning to sunset WordPad in Windows 11 later this year. In the past few months, it has already gained dark mode, tabs, character count, and other stuff that seems to have been willy-nilly added, like a virtual fidget spinner. Now Notepad gets AI with Copilot which raises the bar for the app in quite a way.

That means the addition of spellcheck to Notepad gives this somewhat aged text editor a facelift, filling in the functional gaps between it and other advanced tools, yet remaining at the required level of simplicity and utility.

Russia Forces Apple to Remove VPNs from App Store

Reading Time: < 1 minute read

The Russian government has recently ordered Apple to remove 25 VPNs from its App Store in Russia. Roskomnadzor, the country’s watchdog on telecommunications, made the request for removal. The list of prohibited VPNs includes such popular services as NordVPN, Proton, and Red Shield. In accordance with this watchdog, these VPNs open possibilities for Russian citizens to get various illegal content all over the country.

Furthermore, it was reported to have been written by Roskomnadzor to Apple previously in order to notify it that the VPNs violated the App Review Guidelines. Indeed, emails have already been sent out by Apple to the affected VPN vendors notifying them about the removal. This action puts a spotlight once more on Russia’s never-ending attempt at locking down access to the online world for its people.

It’s the latest in a long line of actions against VPN services in Russia. The Russian government has been trying more and more to control the flow of information since the invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The government is trying to censor content that it considers either harmful or critical of the actions it is undertaking.

That is such a harsh crackdown that now Kaspersky is the only VPN provider connected with the FGIS of Russia. The situation underlines growing restrictions on internet freedom in Russia.

HomePod From Apple Saved a Family from Fire

Reading Time: < 1 minute read

Dramatically, a HomePod from Apple saved an entire family from what is reported as a house fire in Colorado, according to the cause, which was a pet dog. The incident indicates that possibly smart home technology could save lives.

The fire was started by an accidental pet dog that turned on the stove, leading to a spread of flames all over the kitchen. Fortunately, the HomePod—equipped with superior sound recognition—detected the alarm for smoke and warranted alerts to the family.

This further makes the case that sound recognition technology in smart devices is very important. HomePod can warn users of potential danger through its fast identification of certain sounds—for instance, smoke alarms—which gives them enough time to evacuate or respond.

Thanks to the quick response of HomePod, the family was evacuated promptly in advance of the fire further spreading. This real-life situation simply brings into light how technology can turn into the silent yet vigilant guardian within the home to prevent tragedies.

The family was very grateful following the incident, which really brought home the role that the HomePod had played in their rescue. Emphasized was the fact that with regard to smart devices and safety, these should be integrated into life in order to bring peace of mind to a family at large.

Once again, the Apple HomePod has proven itself a stroke of genius. HomePod goes way beyond music and voice commands; it could alert its residents to potentially disastrous events like fires. Such are the life-saving possibilities that home automation systems offer.

Significant Upgrades for Siri with iOS 18.4 Update

Reading Time: < 1 minute read

Major updates for Siri are coming in spring 2025, Apple Intelligence AI available to everyone. In a new report, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman states that the new iOS 18.4 update will make it available to everyone. He writes this in his new Power On newsletter from Bloomberg. Apple previously stated AI features didn’t surface until 2024.

Historically, Apple kept most new features for point updates. This means some of them can arrive much later. For instance, first, the options to find your ID in Photos will come to Siri. On another note, maybe it’s already prepared with an AI emoji generation. Gurman doesn’t mention, but that should be taken into notice as well now.

What’s first will become more evident as the beta versions of iOS 18 start turning on new features this year. Expected this fall is the integration with ChatGPT, a new interface for Siri that includes a pulsing rainbow around the screen bezel, and deeper product knowledge for light tech support from Siri.

Apple’s future AI plan includes AirPods that will house embedded cameras. The supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo mentioned these new AirPods recently, which would work in conjunction with the Vision Pro for gesture and motion detection. Gurman likens them to the Meta’s Ray-ban glasses. AI could help describe your environment and assist navigation. These new AirPods Pro may be two generations away.

Apple Watch Series 10 Enhanced Displays and Health Features

Apple is going to introduce the Apple Watch Series 10, which will reportedly have larger screens. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported this in his recently published newsletter called Power On. These new models will sport larger displays than the ones featured in earlier models. One of them is going to be nearly as large as an Apple Watch Ultra. The Apple Watch Series 10 is thinner and sleeker.

Apple has been working on more advanced health features for its smartwatches, however, some of those features won’t be ready for its next release. Tools being developed are meant for monitoring high blood pressure and sleep apnea. There are many technical obstacles to these features in the development process at Apple. Sleep apnea monitoring requires that the watches be capable of measuring blood oxygen saturation. Apple can’t offer this sort of technology because of a patent dispute.

He also mentions a new version of the Apple Watch SE with a plastic shell, to replace aluminum, which could help cut the starting price of the SE model. Besides the Apple Watch, next-generation Apple Watch Ultra models get new chips that will bring performance improvements to the devices.

Upgrades are coming on the Apple Watch Series 10, and they will be huge. Larger screens and more advanced health features will further improve the user experience. Get ready for this new Apple release.

YouTube New Feature Help Creators Remove Copyrighted Music

Reading Time: < 1 minute read

YouTube is launching an improved feature designed to make life easier when it comes to creators dealing with copyright claims over music used in videos. The company announced that it’s going to launch a new and improved “erase song” tool, which is aimed at assisting creators in removing copyrighted music from parts of videos without touching the rest.

When creators get a copyright claim for music used in videos, YouTube provides options for creators to trim out the section affected or replace the copyrighted song with an approved track from its audio library. Be that as it may, creators cannot be able to monetize the video until the copyright claim is resolved. Although it had been testing the “erase song” tool a while ago, the platform did realize that the accuracy of this tool was not great. So the engineers at YouTube redesigned this tool and infused it with an AI-driven algorithm to ensure that copyrighted music tracks were removed more appropriately from videos.

Though it’s going to be highly capable, YouTube says the tool won’t always be infallible. Sometimes there are songs that are very hard to eradicate, most probably because of the quality of the audio or overlapping sounds. In such a scenario, they will have to find other means to work around these songs. Other than erasing or replacing the copyrighted music, creators can now mute particular parts of their videos using an updated erase tool.

An enhanced “erase song” tool is nearly here for YouTube Studio, which will facilitate a more efficient and effortless way to resolve music copyright issues in videos for creators. The development further underlines how the video-sharing platform works in the interest of creators for a 360-degree creation experience.
