Empowering Parents with Apple Watch for Kids

Reading Time: 2 minutes read

What appears to be a move to sell more smartwatches, Apple has launched a new campaign targeting parents. The Cupertino tech giant is trying to pitch its cellular-equipped Apple Watch as a lifeline for concerned parents.

As per CNBC, the timing of the new campaign comes at a time when many schools are said to be pondering smartphone bans amidst fears over the mental health effects caused by classroom distractions.

A new Apple site, “A Great Call For Kids,” touts how the Apple Watch keeps parents updated on their child’s location and in touch through calls and messages.

According to Apple, it is easy for parents to set up any cellular Apple Watch for their kids, even if they don’t have an iPhone. In this way, the setup will make it easy for kids to communicate and be located by family and friends. This would give peace of mind to the parents and independence to the children.

It has some out-of-the-box thoughts that could prove to be useful for younger users. For instance, Schooltime restricts notifications and apps during school hours with a yellow distinctive circle on the watch face, thus eliminating a lot of digital noise to help them focus through the school day.

Precise Location Tracking with Find My in Apple Watch

Further, Find My enables location tracking with exact locations and even sends a notification to the parents once their child arrives at or leaves places like school or home.

For parents who are beyond concern, looking to put a smartphone into young children’s hands, or for schools looking to ban smartphones, Apple pitches the Apple Watch as a solution.

It pushes directly into long-term trends. Domestic efforts in states and cities like Virginia, New York City, and Los Angeles either enact or propose rules against smartphone use in schools. One of the UK’s most influential schools recently banned smartphones for new 13-year-old students.

Apple’s approach to this goes beyond selling smartwatches to alleviate standard parental concerns about smartphone use in educational settings, mirroring broader social developments aimed at better handling the digital engagement of children.

YouTube Shorts Adds New Features to Compete with Instagram

Reading Time: 2 minutes read

YouTube Shorts has announced some exciting changes to the Shorts feature of the platform. These new functions in the add-yours sticker are in line with the offerings from Instagram and, to some extent, TikTok.

Creators can utilize the sticker for compelling call-to-action. Recommendations include highlighting your cat’s of the day. YouTube aims to spark more inspiration and a snowball effect of cute content. The design of the sticker is very similar to the Instagram rendition. This will help make a very seamless user experience for all who already interact with Instagram feature.

Another update is on adding or editing auto-generated captions on the Shorts themselves, this one gives them colors and fonts, respectively, with the options under consideration. This helps the caption blend better with your videos. Once more, this belongs to the many features linked to Instagram. Any more options are always welcome.

The other is the Text to Speech feature found in YouTube Shorts. Immediately after recording, one can add text and hit the “Add voice” button. One has the option of doing so using the four available voice options for narration. This makes work easier in creating exciting videos.

Finally, Auto Layout will be hitting Android users next month. Auto layout allows the subject in the video to remain in focus during the making. For Android users, you don’t want to miss this feature, especially when creating dynamic content.

These updates will be rolling in a couple of weeks. In features ongoing on YouTube, user experience has been enhanced to live up to the completion.

WhatsApp Upcoming New Live Translation Feature

Reading Time: < 1 minute read

WhatsApp will change the world’s face in a minute through real-time translation. There will be an option for live translations so that conversations across languages go on as smoothly as clockwork, never having to leave an app. With the help of Google Live Translation, almost instantaneous on-device translations can be made without sending the conversation to the cloud.

This feature, combined with others, is intended to obviate the drudgery of copying and pasting messages into separate translation apps so that a user may in real-time translate messages and formerly improve the flow of conversations. That’s a large variance in safety and velocity versus other previous external translations.

The ability to download language packs says a lot about the robust support of several languages, which may just stay parallel with the same extended coverage of different languages, just like Google Translate does. Equally exciting for casual and business communications alike, this is likely to offer smoother interactions across the globe.

Although there is no clear information on the rollout timeline, this feature alone has created waves of excitement since it was discovered in the latest beta version. As WhatsApp polishes this capability and switches it on, it may drastically change the way that users communicate across borders. Stay tuned for more updates as WhatsApp gears up to roll out this game-changing feature.

This new live translation feature underlines WhatsApp’s high regard for improving user experience and bridging the linguistic gaps in this age of an interdependent world. As technology gets further refined, tools like this will be benchmarks in reconnecting and redefining how we communicate across borders.

Allegations Of Cloning At Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2024

Reading Time: 2 minutes read

On the 11th of July 2024, Samsung released several new products within its reach, the Galaxy Watch Ultra and the Galaxy Buds 3 series at Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2024. Instead of lauding praise, though, it was met with much backlash—being accused of copying Apple designs.

It wasn’t long before some critics—tech reviewers and social media users alike—hit upon striking similarities between Samsung’s new offerings and Apple’s established products. Of these, special scrutiny fell on the Galaxy Watch Ultra for its watch band and overall resemblance to Apple’s flagship smartwatch.

Moving on to the Galaxy Buds 3 series, much of the same kind of criticism came up. Indeed, many referred to the earbuds as shameless clones of Apple’s AirPods, pointing out not just design similarities but also functional ones that duplicated Apple’s really popular wireless earphones.

Beyond the chatter on social media, major publications, like The Verge and Business Insider, picked up this feeling that there wasn’t anything original about Samsung’s latest releases. It insinuates strategic positioning by Samsung in going toe-to-toe with Apple through the adoption and replication of its successful design language.

At this year’s Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2024, technological strides showcased themselves, but also heaved up controversy over allegations of design cloning. The debate underlines how stiff the contest is within the industry of technology and begs the question of real innovation versus simple product emulations.

Google Gemini is the Future Replacement for Google Assistant?

Reading Time: 2 minutes read

It is pretty evident that Google has been more focused on AI innovations than ever before by its recent developments like Bard, now rebranded to Gemini. The transformation targets the integration of this AI into all services used by the consumer base of Google.

Integration with Gemini hasn’t been perfect—especially with core features like setting alarms and timers, which come natively in Google Assistant but aren’t available yet in Gemini. A recent beta of the Google app indicates that may be about to change.

According to reports from @AssembleDebug on X, the latest Google app beta adds a new Clock extension meant specifically for the AI. With this update, Gemini will finally be able to handle alarms and timers all on its own—including features that were previously dependent on Google Assistant.

Not only has additional functionality been included, but Google is testing the accessibility of this AI from the lock screen. Screenshots show a dedicated menu page where a user could toggle several different Gemini features—including its new Clock Tool- alongside other utilities such as Flights, Hotels, and Maps.

Even as all these changes were coming, Gemini was in process, much akin to iterative software updates at Google. Issues such as the initial feature gap and at worst, the concerns of securing the data of its users, have stood pivotal on its road to development.

As Google gets Gemini polished and continues to add key features, it looks good for this budding AI assistant. The Clock Tool and lock screen changes are two massive steps for Gemini to become the default assistant on future Pixels.

Elon Musk Triumphs in Twitter Severance Pay Lawsuit

Reading Time: < 1 minute read

Elon Musk has just won a court case related to severance pay at Twitter. Over 6,000 employees lost their jobs in the social media giant when he acquired it. A former employee, Courtney McMillian, had filed a class-action lawsuit against Musk for failing to provide full severance allowances mandated under federal law.

The lawsuit came under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act, and it claimed that three months’ pay was owed in severance for the laid-off workers. However, US District Judge Trina Thompson has dismissed a class-action complaint, saying the severance plan in question was not covered under ERISA because the employees were formerly notified that a different payout scheme would be used before the layoffs were announced.

Although this ruling by Judge Thompson does allow the plaintiffs to amend their complaint for non-ERISA claims, this case can further proceed, where future legal actions may be taken to stake a larger compensation surrounding former employees.

Other lawsuits are pending against X Corp/Twitter, such as those by former top executives who claim millions in unpaid severance and legal fees. Cases that create a portrait of complexity around the legal tussles between corporate acquisitions and employee rights in Silicon Valley.

While Musk’s victory is a defeat for fired Twitter employees hoping to fight for full severance under ERISA, the door remains open to pursue other future legal avenues toward fair compensation.

Meta VR Expands New Social Features for Kids

Reading Time: 2 minutes read

Meta Announced a major update to its Quest VR Platform. Now, users aged 10-12 can interact with others in virtual reality. However, the possibility of such activity is allowed only after getting approval from their parents. The event marked a change in Meta’s VR policy toward younger users.

Meta VR

Previously, kids on Quest couldn’t chat or otherwise interact with other users, now, with a future update, parents will be able to add approved contacts one by one. These contacts can chat with, call, and join VR experiences with their child. The new feature is expected to bring a social benefit to VR for kids.

It believes that introducing young users to VR has its long-term benefits, Meta says. The hope is that children using VR now will be the ones sticking around as they age. This move may further let Meta compete with Roblox and Minecraft. Both of those services are very popular among young users.

Meta VR Social Features for Parental Management

Parents have a significant say in managing accepted contacts, parents can add contacts to their child’s Following list and Followers list. Also, children may request followers to become accepted contacts. More importantly, parents can delete any accepted contact at any time.

Meta VR

It is reported that Meta reduced the age recommendation of its Quest headset from 13 years to 10 years last year before finally releasing parent-managed accounts. Such accounts allow children to access age-appropriate content in VR. Meta has now announced the addition of social features to the accounts.

Despite all the good work done so far, there are still unknown risks that come with VR technology. Parents, rights groups, and researchers were concerned about how children could be protected in this regard. The move by Meta will thus be done at the most appropriate time.

Meta VR

Congress turns up the heat on social media companies to protect kids. Meta, TikTok, and Snapchat are all in the hot seat. So, Meta’s decision to add social features to children’s accounts on Quest couldn’t have come at a worse time.

Pixel 9 Camera Bump Redesign: A Step Backward?

Reading Time: 2 minutes read

The new Pixel 9 series by Google is said to have a similar camera bump that has been redesigned. Unfortunately, from leaked details, the reception is showing some mixed signals. Most people appreciate how Google updates its camera bump annually. However, most people get upset when it’s a change for the sake of change, and this design might be a step backward.

Leaked Details of the Pixel 9 Camera Bump

Many leaks have surfaced before the official launch. These leaks show a new design of the camera bar. According to the leaks, the Pixel9 series has a nearly symmetrical camera bump. This element of the design seems jarring to many viewers. Symmetry in design is usually preferred.

The leaked video shows a camera bump with 60% glass and 40% metal. This symmetric design has somehow been unintentional, wherein the right side is said to contain the flash, thus remaining imbalanced. This thick camera bar protrudes a bit from the body of the smartphone. Questions may be explicitly stated about how functional this design is aesthetically.

Functional Concerns with Pixel 9 Camera Bump

Currently, the bars on Pixel cameras have metal protection for the lenses. With the new design, that doesn’t seem to be the case. This would hence always lead to increased scratches in the glass lenses. Additionally, the Pixel 9 camera bump might become even less functional overall. Changes may not practically facilitate the use of the user.

This doesn’t seem like a design inspired by the immediate competition—the Pixel 9. The iPhone 15 Pro Max and the Galaxy S24 Ultra have contrasting metal and glass accents that make the camera housing pop in those designs. It’s something the new design of the Pixel 9 lacks. The new camera bump could fall a bit flat in users’ expectations.

The Pixel has been known for its camera bar design. This design allows a phone to lie flat on surfaces without rocking. This feature of the design was received positively by users. Now redesigning Pixel 9 might lose that functionality. Of course, it would be missed by users due to the practical benefits of the older design.

It’s worrying to redesign the camera bump on the Pixel 9. This near-symmetry looks accidental and jarring. One could easily lose functionality with reduced protection for the lenses. Against rivals, it looks plain. Google could turn out a design that users wouldn’t want to see.
