Netflix recently revealed that it is working to establish a new in-house games studio which will be based in Helsinki, Finland.ย

In the announcement, Amir Rahimi, the company’s vice president of game studios explains that Helsinki is chosen because it is home to some of the world’s top gaming talent. This will be a brand-new games studio, as well as their second in Helsinki, following Next Games, which was acquired by Netflix earlier this year.

In addition, he also said that this is another important step toward their ultimate goal of creating a top-tier games studio that can supply hundreds of millions of users all over the world with a wide selection of fun and challenging unique games that are completely free of ads and in-app payments.

As reported by CNBC, the streaming service’s debut in gaming is still in its infancy, but as of August, not many Netflix users were actively engaged in it. Moreover, Apptopia reports that less than 1% of Netflix’s 220 million subscribers regularly play the service’s games.

Despite the lower number of support from users, it seems that Netflix is positive that this project has the potential to contribute to its venture into the gaming field.ย

However, this development may take a longer time before it will be released to users, as Rahimi claims โ€œCreating a game can take years, so Iโ€™m proud to see how weโ€™re steadily building the foundation of our games studios in our first year, and look forward to sharing what we produce in the coming years.โ€
