Meta, in partnership with EssilorLuxottica, the company behind the renowned Ray-Ban brand, has recently announced the launch of their cutting-edge product, the second-generation Meta smart glasses. This latest iteration marks a notable advancement in the product line, featuring substantial enhancements in key features along with the introduction of several new and compelling attributes.
Stepping away from the ‘Stories’ branding of the first generation, the latest version stands out with a lighter and more slender build. This generation offers two distinct models: one features the classic Ray-Ban Wayfarer design, while the other introduces the new ‘Headliner’ style for a vintage flair. Importantly, both designs support prescription lenses, enhancing their practicality.
Durable Design and Advanced Features: IPX4 Rating and AI Integration

These frames aren’t just aesthetically pleasing; they’re also built for durability. With an IPX4 water-resistance rating, they can withstand light water splashes, although they’re not fully rainproof. Meta has also refined the touchpad for more responsive touch controls, perfect for use on the go. A standout feature is the integration of Meta’s AI, which can be activated with a simple “Hey Meta” command. However, it’s worth noting that this feature will initially be available as a beta version in the US only.
The company highlights the ease of engaging with Meta AI. Users can effortlessly interact with their glasses to spark creativity, access information, and manage various features, all through voice commands.

Camera capabilities have seen a notable upgrade. The glasses now sport ultra-wide 12MP cameras and are powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon AR1 Gen1 Platform, promising faster processing and high-quality photo and video output. Users can now capture 12MP photographs and 1080p videos up to one minute in length.
Enhanced Battery Life and Innovative Charging Solutions

Battery life is also improved, with the glasses offering up to 36 hours of use. This equates to approximately eight full charges. Ray-Ban has thoughtfully designed the charging case to resemble a standard glasses case, featuring a discreet ring light that indicates the charging status. The case and glasses can be recharged using a USB-C connection.
A particularly exciting addition is the ability to live stream hands-free directly to Facebook or Instagram. Users can interact with their audience in real time by simply tapping and holding the side of the glasses, with comments being read aloud through the glasses’ built-in text-to-speech feature. However, live streaming is limited to 30 minutes per session.
The glasses are currently available for pre-order on the official Meta and Ray-Ban websites, starting at USD 299 (approximately RM1,408). They will be openly available for purchase from October 17. While there is no confirmation yet on their availability in other regions, the anticipation for these next-gen smart glasses is undoubtedly high.
