The Holographic Communications Project To Enable 3D Video Calls Soon

Reading Time: 2 minutes read

Together with the Matsuko startup, the French mobile provider Orange, the German Deutsche Telekom, Spain’s Telefónica, and the UK’s Vodafone are working to build a European platform for holographic communications.

This development will enable callers to appear as holograms in either a real or totally virtual setting. Sounds interesting right?

Due to the advancements that have been made in communications networks, these four operators have set their sights on providing their home and business customers with fully immersive 3D experiences within the next few years.

As reported by Malaymail, a first pilot project should allow a small number of clients to participate in this type of holographic communications session. For instance, a person with a 5G smartphone might be able to film themselves and appear to others as a 3D holographic projection rendered in real-time.

Intriguingly, the hologram can appear, move, and also interact in a real-world location, like a conference room, or in a purely digital one. Nonetheless, at this time of writing, the outcome is only accessible via AR/VR goggles/headsets.

Furthermore, after this trial period concludes, the operators will further refine the technology and explore its functionalities in other areas. The organisation is working toward creating programmes that suggest new ways of interacting, such as one-on-one or in small groups. The end effect should also be viewable on any augmented reality-capable device, so a special headset isn’t required.

With this kind of technology, businesses can strike up more creative conversations with their clientele. In addition, users can look forward to sharing exciting immersive experiences with loved ones. This development would also bring virtual meetings to another level.
