Google Pixel 9: Malaysia Included in New Market Expansion?

Reading Time: 2 minutes read

The very first Google Pixel smartphone made its way to the market in 2016 and was the successor to the Google Nexus devices. Although it was much hyped, Pixel smartphones never saw an official launch in Malaysia. Well, that might change this year.

Local tech pundit Xavier Naxa let it slip that there is now a new Google subsection within Urban Republic’s online store. Currently, the subsection is empty, but its availability speaks volumes about what will transpire. The move suggests that Google will try to penetrate the Malaysian market very shortly.

Previously, Malaysia had been one of the official markets for Google consumer devices. Malaysians could get their hands on Nexus smartphones and Google Chromecast. That changed in 2016. The rebranding to “Made by Google” meant that their focus moved away from Malaysia.

Even though the Pixel 8 series was earlier released in just 22 countries, hopes are still up for Malaysia. Its selective distribution for the Pixel Fold is highly visible in just four countries. The new listing on Urban Republic’s website, however, may be a sign of change.

The much-anticipated Google Pixel 9 series is slated for launch soon. Confirmation from Urban Republic hints at a new market announcement by Google for its smartphones. The list will be announced on August 14th, and we all have to wait until then to find out if Malaysia makes the list.

Certainly, this will be a moment of cheer for Malaysian tech enthusiasts. If the Pixel range of Google’s smartphones does make it to the country, then it will revive the long-lost presence of Google hardware in Malaysia.
