YouTube has officially confirmed to TechCrunch that it’s working on a way to block users using VPN to get cheaper YouTube subscriptions.

In case you are not aware, if you use a premium VPN service you can set it to a country such as India and then you can get cheaper Netflix, Amazon and YouTube Premium subscriptions. For instance, in Malaysia YouTube subscription is around MYR18 which means if you set your location to India, you can get the YouTube Premium somewhere around MYR8 approximately. Did you see how much you can save with this simple hack?

According to YouTube, with this new feature the moment it detects a user is lying about their location, the app will automatically prompt the user to update their billing information. In this case, the moment the billing information shows another country, the YouTube Premium subscription will be declined.

Here’s the information shared by the YouTube spokesperson:

To provide the most accurate plans and offers available, we have systems in place to determine the country of our users.
