Wiz Buyout for $23 Billion: Google’s Bold Cloud Security Move

Reading Time: < 1 minute read

Google is considering a $23 billion buyout of Wiz, a cloud cybersecurity startup. If completed as per The Wall Street Journal, it would represent the priciest acquisition ever made by Google. So, among its partners are big names such as Amazon and Oracle, giving a lot of value to Wiz.

Wiz, HQed in New York City, focuses on “siloed security tools and scanners.” It protects enterprises’ cloud infrastructure by providing a normalizing layer between clouds. This assures that companies detect and eliminate critical threats within moments.

Fresh from the reported breaches of Microsoft, Google hopes to get at its rival’s jugular. Google Cloud boss Thomas Kurian comes across as pushing this acquisition effort rather than blocking and tackling. If completed, it would give a fillip to Google’s reputation as a secure Cloud site.

In 2022, it acquired another cloud security startup for half a billion dollars. Not to forget, it also made the acquisition of Mandiant for $5.4 billion. Mandiant was the company that in the same year detected the massive SolarWinds hack, so such moves certainly suggest that Google is quite serious about cloud security.

The New York Times reported that the deal seems likely to happen but may draw the attention of US regulators. The Biden administration has been fairly aggressive when it comes to antitrust actions.

If consummated, this acquisition would have been the biggest deal for Google. The acquisition could position Google as a leader in secure cloud platforms.
