WhatsApp New Feature: Social Media or Messaging?

Reading Time: 2 minutes read

Status Likes and Private Mentions, two features, are launched to all WhatsApp users. WhatsApp new feature allows the user to communicate with their contacts in connection with the Status updates more directly. In general, both tools offer a greater degree of control and amplify privacy during regular interaction.

Full Stop Likes lets the receiver know that the user likes something by simply tapping the heart emoji. However, only the status poster gets to know that people who liked the update were happy to do so. It makes the interaction a more one-on-one form of communication. This looks somewhat like Instagram story likes but more personal than that.

With with Private Mentions, users can tag certain contact friends within a particular Status update. This posts the message publicly, but they receive a notification message on the particular person that was mentioned. A current will enable the users to have more options on how to share status with select groups and persons.

Both of these updates move WhatsApp closer to the world of social networking. All of them resemble elements from other Meta apps, such as Instagram or Messenger. Thus, the following tools are introduced to the increasingly popular WhatsApp, more, notify or share, and connect.

However, what is interesting is that even with this Whatsapp new feature, WhatsApp continues to be a messaging application. But Status Likes and Private Mentions are getting nearer to a social media site. It shifts value for users who want to have some sort of detailed and individualistic approach to their experiences in life.
