Google Authenticator is an app that generates codes to help you log into your online accounts securely. Previously, if you lost the device that had the app installed, you lost access to your accounts. Now, with a recent update, the codes generated by the app are stored in your Google Account. This means that even if you lose your device, you can still access your accounts by signing in somewhere else. This update makes Google Authenticator more convenient and secure to use.

Google Authenticator was released in 2010, and a lot of users have been complaining about its limitations. It took over a decade for Google to address one major issue: if you lost your device, you lost access to your accounts. This slow pace may seem surprising for such a big company, but at least they’ve finally fixed the problem. It’s better late than never.

The update to Google Authenticator that stores codes in your Google Account is not yet available at the time of writing. When it is released, the app icon will also get a new look, with an asterisk and the colors of the Chrome browser. The update will be rolled out to Android and iOS devices gradually, so not everyone will get it at the same time.
