Andrej Karpathy, Tesla’s departing AI chief, is going to start Eureka Labs. He envisions it as an “AI native” education platform aimed at changing the way teaching is done with AI. With its base in San Francisco, Eureka Labs is proposed to work on artificial intelligence teaching assistants. Karpathy had registered the company as an LLC in Delaware.

Eureka Labs is Banking on generative AI. AI assistants will guide students through course materials. These assistants will be utilized in conjunction with human teachers. Teachers shall design course materials, helped by AI Assistants. However, it is yet to be established whether they are effective.

It’s not even clear if Eureka Lab is self-funded or whether there are investors. Karpathy signed the startup’s LLC filing alone. He claimed he hasn’t disclosed any high-profile collaborators. According to Karpathy, he is interested in AI and education. Eureka Labs comprises two decades of work for him.

Karpathy taught at Stanford University in a course on deep learning, he also was a co-founder of OpenAI before leading Tesla’s AI team and later going back to lead a ChatGPT team in OpenAI. In a recent update, Karpathy announced that he is leaving both Tesla and OpenAI drama-free. He now still teaches about AI through online courses and YouTube lectures.
