Security: ChatGPT macOS app accidentally stores chat in plain text

Reading Time: < 1 minute read

Recently, OpenAI has launched the macOS version of its ChatGPT app. However, due to the recent security flaws OpenAI accidentally stored the chats on the computer as plain text. Even though this seems to be a small security issue, later-stage hackers can get access to your computer and access to your conversations.

Immediately, after noticing this security flaw, OpenAI has already encrypted the chat which was stored locally on your Mac. The OpenAI spokesperson mentioned that they are aware of the issues and have already shipped a new version of the application which encrypts the conversation.

But, before this update was released, Pedro José Pereira Vieito demonstrated that a simple ChatGPTStealer app can steal conversations from the ChatGPT app. This means another app can access the conversations as well. However, after the update, the conversation stealer app is not functional anymore.
