Apple and Google have teamed up to address the misuse of location-tracking devices. The tech giants have submitted a proposal to make devices like AirTags compatible with unauthorized tracking detection and alerts on both iOS and Android platforms. This first-of-its-kind specification aims to combat stalking and unwanted tracking. Other manufacturers like Samsung, Tile, Chipolo, Eufy, and Pebblebee have also supported this proposal.

Bluetooth trackers have many benefits but also come with the risk of unwanted tracking. Google is committed to protecting its users and will collaborate with the industry to combat misuse. Apple and Google have submitted a proposal to the Internet Engineering Task Force to create a specification for Bluetooth location-tracking devices. The proposal is open for interested parties to review for the next three months. Apple and Google will release a production implementation of the specification by the end of the year supported on future versions of iOS and Android.

Apple launched AirTag to help users find their important items and built proactive features to discourage unwanted tracking. The new industry specification builds upon AirTag protections to combat unwanted tracking across iOS and Android. Ron Huang, Apple’s VP of Sensing and Connectivity, believes this proposal is a critical step forward. The proposal has gained support from safety and advocacy groups like the National Network to End Domestic Violence and the Center for Democracy and Technology. These groups have been advocating for universal standards to protect people from the misuse of Bluetooth tracking devices.
