Since the onset of foldable design innovations, the Galaxy Z Fold series has been setting new paradigms in the smartphone space. Way back in 2019, Samsung stretched its imagination for foldable tech, with every consecutive device thinner, sturdier, and more compact, thereby replacing the previous iteration. Major improvements have been made to the hinge designs and display protection, which are resilient.

Galaxy Fold 2019: When Foldable Phones Are Born

The Galaxy Fold, launched in 2019, heralded foldable smartphones. This device introduced a large-screen experience when unfolded and a portable one when folded.

Notably, the innovative hinge design by Samsung guaranteed natural and intuitive folding and unfolding. Folded, the thickness was 17.1 millimeters, while unfolded it was 7.6 millimeters. Thus marked it the beginning of smart foldables.

Galaxy Z Fold 2 is a follow-up to the

The Galaxy Z Fold2 has been available since 2020, bringing even more innovations. Hideaway Hinge provided stable folding at various angles for the first time.

This hinge greatly enabled Flex Mode for selfies and video calls. Sweeper Technology from Samsung protected this display from dust. The folded thickness is now 16.8 millimeters thinner for better portability on the Z Fold2.

Overcoming Waterproofing Challenges with Galaxy Z Fold 3

Water resistance unfolded first on the Galaxy Z Fold3 in 2021. Samsung applied waterproofing to the Display and Hinge. It was coated with corrosion-resistant material, a silicone-based gasket, which made sure to protect it well. Armor Aluminum used in the hinge gave it added durability. Folded thickness is further reduced to 16 millimeters to make it thinner and lighter.

Design Improvement Galaxy Z Fold4

The Galaxy Z Fold4, released in 2022, enormously diminished the weight and thickness of the device. It weighed 263 grams, 20 grams lighter than the previous one.

Samsung redesigned the hinge to be 21% lighter due to the operation mechanism of linear motion. This made the folded-back thickness go down to 15.8 millimeters, the thinnest since the series began.

Dependency Injection of Flex Hinge: Galaxy Z Fold5 2023

The Galaxy Z Fold5 introduced the Flex Hinge in 2023. With this new mechanism, the display would curl into the hinge. In this design, gaps and creases are eliminated when folded.

The Z Fold5 became the lightest and thinnest Galaxy Z Fold with a folded thickness of 13.4 millimeters and weighing 253 grams for maximum portability and stability.

Samsung has been refining its Galaxy Z Fold series. Every passing year, they focus more on exact engineering and detailed manufacturing. The development of hinges and the thickness of the device have hugely improved the foldable utility. Samsung has been ahead of its time with never-before gadgets to make life most convenient for people around the globe.

Samsung will continue to build on its legacy of unprecedented foldables, ensuring that more people can utilize them for an even more convenient life.
