The Malaysia Semiconductor IC Design Park has just launched in Puchong, Selangor. This 0.6-hectare facility is the country’s very first chip design hub. It was developed by the government to enhance the position of Malaysia in the semiconductor industry. It belongs to the critical components of the “Made by Malaysia” ambitions.

Completed within just three months since the announcement during the KL20 Summit, this design park featured international semiconductor firms and venture capitalists brought together in cooperation with the government to be part of a vision for Malaysia to be a global chip design powerhouse.

On the launch, Economic Minister Rafizi Ramli said that local semiconductor design is of importance. He added that Malaysia needs to develop its semiconductor capabilities and not depend on mere imports. The Ministry thinks that this focus is going to attract more foreign investment.

The semiconductor ecosystem will include upstream and downstream industries. Original design manufacturers are another integral part of the ecosystem. Data centers are targeted to use “Made by Malaysia” chips.

Selangor is going to play an integral role in the growth of the semiconductor industry. State leaders hope to see chips labeled, “Made in Malaysia, Designed in Selangor.”
