The government is starting a test project where people can only apply for passports online. There are 77 passport offices in the country, but 21 of them are very crowded. These 21 officers will be part of the test project and will only be used for people to pick up their passports, not apply for them in person.
The immigration department had to work extra hours, even on the weekends, to reduce long waiting times caused by a large number of people applying for passports. After the Covid-19 pandemic, the department issued 2.8 million passports, which is four times more than before. Out of that number, 45% of people applied online, while the remaining 55% applied in-person.
