UPDATE – The Penang Smart Parking app is now available from Google Play store too. The Penang state government will also be offering RM5 credit for the first 10,000 users who signup for the Penang Smart Parking app.

However, several users have reported they are not able to verify their mobile number. This happens when a person enters their mobile number and then when they enter the TAC code, the app is not responding. It seems it requires 8-digit code however the TAC which receives is 6-digit code only. We are now checking with the support team and will update soon.
People from Penang usually know how hard is it to get a parking spot, especially during the working hours. Sometimes we have to park our car at the roadside as temporary parking. This is totally a hassle for us. Thanks to our Penang Chief Minister, Chow Kon Yeow is working on making Penang be one of the first Smart city in Malaysia.
Back in May, the Penang government officials say Penang is now ready to be the gigabit city. This means sooner Penang can be declared as a Smart city. Now, Penang is taking its first step to becoming a Smart city by introducing Penang Smart Parking System (PSP) app. This app allows drivers around Penang to find parking and to pay for their parking. This whole process can be done with a few taps within your smartphone.
Next time, you don’t have to buy the municipal council parking coupon when you park your car. You can easily pay it via your smartphone. At the launch event, Penang Chief Minister, also announces that RM5 worth of free credits will be given to the first 10,000 users who sign up for this app. He also encourages the public to use eWallet technologies.
How does the PSP works?
First of all, some of you might be curious, how you can know the availability of a parking lot via your smartphone. This where the Internet of Things comes into the picture. Each of the parking lots around Penang will be installed with sensors. With these sensors, it should be able to detect whether the parking lot is taken.

This information will be sent to the cloud constantly in real-time. Then when you use the PSP app, you should be able to view the list of parking lots available in your current location. Other than that, there is also direction guidance inside the app where you can use it to direct your location to the parking lot. This is something really useful for everyone.
In case you need to reload the amount in your eWallet, the app accepts various payment methods such as online banking, Boost, 7-Eleven and WeChat Pay. We can expect the app might support more payment channels such as Grab Pay.
For now, the municipal council has already installed a total of 36,000 parking bays in Penang. 12,000 parking bays are under the supervision of Penang City Council (PCC) whereas, the remaining 24,000 parking bays are under the supervision of Seberang Perai Municipal Council.
At this moment, the app is only available in the App Store for iOS devices. However, the app is not yet available in the Google Play Store yet. We will update once the app is available for Android devices too.
For more information, you can either call the PSP helpline 03-8026 8128 or you can even visit the PSP official page. You can also contact the support team via Facebook page too.
